Here's a response from Suave:

Hi celiac3270,

Thanks for writing!

We do not specifically test our products for the presence of gluten, a

sticky protein found in some grains such as wheat.  Gluten may be present

in products that contain derivatives of wheat, oat, rye, and barley. In

labeling our products, our company follows the guidelines established by

the International Nomenclature for Cosmetics Ingredients (INCI)process.

Therefore, if we use an ingredient derived from a grain such as wheat,

oat, rye and / or barley, those names will appear on the label.

Example

One common example is "Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein" If you see this name on

the label, the material was derived from wheat, so the product may contain

gluten.

We recommend that you consult with your physician as to whether your

exposure to grain derivatives from the use of personal care products will

cause the symptoms of Celiac-Sprue Disease.

We hope this information is helpful,

Your friends at Suave

Thanks celiac3270, for posting that letter. Boy, you sure do your homework! Actually, I had wondered about Suave's position on gluten. I had seen an ambiguous listing somewhere, as to whether or not Celiacs could safely use their products which left me uncertain, so I have avoided them. Given what they wrote, do you personally feel comfortable using their goods? Do you think that it's enough that there are no gluten derived substances in them, or is testing necessary? Oye! You can drive yourself crazy with this stuff! (Hope you're still on a roll, health-wise. :) ) Talk to you later.

I am still doing wel :D -- 25 days w/o getting sick!!!!

I am not extremely careful when it comes to shampoo--I wouldn't use Suave if I had DH, but I think I'd feel comfortable using their shampoo if it didn't have wheat, rye, HVP, etc. on the label. The reason I wouldn't use it if I had DH is their statement about not testing for gluten.

I use all Suave products. No prodlems that I am aware of. :)

Anyone know any gluten-free facts on VO-5 shampoos? I like them too.

I have DH and get it first on my scalp. I have been using Suave for years and after going gluten-free the DH went away and has stayed away except for the occasional gluten accident. Never had a problem with Suave. I did have problems with many other shampoos before I knew about gluten, now I know why! I don't buy any shampoos that have any wheat derivatives listed on the labels, but it can get tedious reading all that tiny print. It would be easy to miss it listed in there. I recently bought some White Rain and noticed that 3 of the 4 varieties they had on the shelf did not contain wheat, but the fourth one did. I almost didn't read the label on the fourth, but thought I had better be safe than sorry. Boy was I glad I read it! It was a reminder that I need to read EVERY label!

God bless,

Mariann

I use Suave, too. And recently I had that "shampooey" taste on my tongue. And I knew, I was about to swallow something. And then it was already too late. The stupid thing is, once you have that "shampooey" taste, you can spit and spit all you want. It's not coming out of your mouth  . So I'm real glad, Suave is glutenfree, too.

Hugs, Stef

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
