Wedding Question

My brother is getting married at the end of January. There are 2 meal options, roast beef (probably with au jus (?)) and crab stuffed flounder. I'm positive the crab stuffed flounder is out of the question, but as for the roast beef, I am leaning towards that. He is my brother so I don't feel bad or rude about asking him to find out nutrition information from the caterer.

If they can't tell me what the ingredients are, should i not choose a meal and save them money? I won't have time to eat before hand because I'm in the wedding party and we will be busy all day. OR Do I just pick the roast beef so i'm not the only person without a meal?

I haven't even been gluten-free for 3 months yet, and I'm feeling very uneasy about dining out still.

Your brother might be busy with other preparations. Ask him how to reach the caterer and contact them yourself. Check and see if they can prepare a separate meal without gluten (au jus or seasonings) plain veggies or whatever is on the menu. It won't be as good, but it won't make you sick.

I always feel better when I am not depending upon other interpretations of my needs.

I agree. Contact the caterer. Most of them are pretty familiar with the gluten free diet, and can be pretty accommodating; in fact, my mom just recently got married and we are having a big bash for the all the extended family and friends and the caterer is going to have gluten free foods there just for me. Now, you can be sure I'm going to go over it a million times, but she didn't have the deer in the headlights look, which is always a good sign.

I just got married two weeks ago and had a lot of people with different food issues. Most of them told me when they RSVP-ed about the issues and I brought them up during the final sit-down with my venue and catering. I had to put the item on their place card and they had to make sure to tell the server about their issue. It seemed to work out well.

Contacting the caterer might be the way to go, but I think they might listen more if it comes from your brother.

i went to a wedding a few weeks ago and i went ahead of time and talked to the hotel where the food was being prepared. they were able to go through the entire menu and we discussed what i'd be able to eat. the only problem was the woman forgot to mention the gluten-filled sauce they slathered all over the beef! i had to send it back and get a new plate with plain meat.

despite the inadvertent mistake, i definitely felt better going to the wedding knowing i'd be able to eat the food. ask your brother for the caterers phone number - it'll be better for you to discuss it directly with the caterer so nothing gets confused or mixed up.

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
