I Have A Cold

So I'm going to be tested for celiac because cutting out gluten improved my gut symptoms (and other symptoms).

Then I came to my parent's house for the holidays...I have a pretty severe cold (coughing, sore throat, etc) and am taking medications for all of that. I also started a challenge in order to make sure that if I have celiac that adequate antibodies are present. But I'm finding that I'm having fewer symptoms. I'm eating a lot of gluten, but I've only been nauseous once or twice and I have not had any loose stools.

Has anyone else experienced this in the midst of a cold? I'm wondering if, with the cold and being slightly dehydrated, some of the symptoms are lessened.

I know that everyone's body is very different. I have this image of the internal immune battle being waged so hard against the virus that has invaded my body that it is giving my gut a break.

P.S. My mom traditionally makes a turkey and rice soup on Xmas day. Great for the cold and gentle on the tummy!

Three possibilities immediately come to mind:

1) Your intestines have healed already to the point where you can eat a little gluten without FEELING symptoms (but intestinal damage may be ongoing, nonetheless),

2) You may not have a problem with gluten after all

3) Your cold MEDS might be shutting off your immune system's reaction (but again, damage may be ongoing).

If you are planning to be tested for celiac, you need to be eating plenty of gluten (3-4 pieces of bread per day for 3-4 MONTHS before the test). Otherwise, your body will stop making antibodies to gluten (if you have gluten intolerance or celiac), and the test will be negative even if you are a text-book celiac!

The blood work tests for antibodies against gluten. You don't make them if you aren't eating it.

And cold meds lesson the symptoms of a cold by shutting off the immune system's reaction to the virus--but that doesn't mean you are healthy any sooner. If anything, it screws up your immune system, and it makes your cold last LONGER because your immune system's response (the annoying runny noise, sneezing, etc.) is how your body fights the cold. Shut down the response, and the cold virus actually multiplies, and you are left less able to fight other infections.

You might very well feel better if you just stayed away from cold meds--despite what the pharmaceutical industry wants you to think (and pay them $$ for their product, which does NOT cure the cold).

Either way, I hope you feel better soon! (NOTHING beats mom's chicken soup!)

What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
