Hi ! I am reading the book: "Breaking The Vicious Cycle." Has anyone else read this book? Has anyone gone on the SCD diet?? I am seriously thinking of starting it, and staying on it for the recommended year. Any encouragement/advice I can get would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

I have read most of this book and I think that if you are willing to put the time and energy into the diet than it will probably be worth it. I have read many succuss stories. I am sure that the diet relieves symptoms in most individuals suffering from celiac, chron's, colitis... However, beware of their claim that it cures celiac disease. I have posted on this before:

I have this book called Breaking the Vicious Cycle and it introduces the Specific Carboyhydrate Diet claiming it "cures" celiac disease. "Directed to the medical community, the book documented the doctors' experiences in treating and curing hundreds of cases of celiac disease as well as cases of cystic fibrosis of the pancreas." This book descibes and explains a lot of the things you, red345, have been talking about.

Here is some info:

I realize that this diet has helped a lot of people and I have no dout that it does relieve symptoms. I understand that if you are eating a lot of sugars and carbs then you are essentially feeding present microbes in your intestines resulting in discomfort. However...

I am skeptical of the claim that the Specific Carboyhydrate Diet cures celiac disease because if this diet really CURES celiac disease then why don't doctors make everyone with celiac disease go on this diet?

Any thoughts?

Hmm... I read in the book that it cures the other diseases, but it clearly states that it will NOT cure celiac because there is currently no cure. I will look for the exact quote and post it.

It doesn't claim to cure celiac disease--but many celiacs find that once they start this diet, their symptoms go away. As you will read, it's difficult to implement because you're essentially cutting out all processed foods and then many staple ingredients....Strack2004 has been on the diet for over six months so she could help you out more than I could. Here are some links on the internet for it:

Hi! Yes I have been on the SCD diet for 6 almost 7 months.. I have lost weight and for a time I had a lot more energy. I still sleep fairly well except for waking for the bathroom. I drink too much water in the evening. The diet never did really help my digestive problems. Have just spent 5 days in the hospital over them. Fortunately this hospital had a plan whereby patients can pick their meals from a restaurant like menu. I was interested to see on another post some comments about possibly getting into trouble after losing weight. I have gone down from around 150 lbs. at the b eginning of last summer, to between 120 and 125. The Dr. isn't worried about it. Digestion wise, I am awakened during the night or from a nap and sometimes during waking hours with an alarming burning that seems to go up from a sore place under my right ribcage up into my throat. The burning comes to a peak and recedes to a steady burn. In the hospital I had an upper gastroscopic exam which located the sore spot under my ribs. It is not an ulcer. Biopsies were taken, Also was tested for H. Pylorus which came back negative. Am presently taking cytotec, 4 times a day with meals, lexipro, and Prilosec. Was supposed to take Protonix, but my insurance wouldn't pay for it. Anyway, had taken that for the better part of a year without significant help. Also had a colonoscopy which showed what I already knew that I have an overlarge bowel that is very floppy. One X-ray I had along time ago showed the upper right hand corner flopped over on itself. To my mind this could cause a backup of stool that would account for my constipation thing. I guess I get worried that this cytotec could back up in my system. So I called the Dr. and he said to cut the dose in half. This is getting long again. I was feeling some better, but now am worse again. Strack. p.s. was never diagnosed with celiac, just use the diet because it is also supposed to be good for other digestive problems.

I'm still not 100% sure on the whole curing celiac disease thing... It says this right on their website

Directed to the medical community, the book documented the doctors' experiences in treating and curing hundreds of cases of celiac disease

and I'm almost postive I read in the book that it cures celiac.

Now the question here is... Does "cure" mean that a person on the diet still had celiac disease and is just symptom free? or does it actually mean that it "cures" celiac?

I believe that it does not essentially cure celiac and I have no doubt that the diet results in reduced or zero symptoms. I just think that they are using the term cure to describe symtom free.

I think that the term cure should not be used unless it means cure all gone no more! B)

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
