Safe Hot Sauce?

Sailing Girl

Recommended Posts

Sailing Girl Apprentice

Hi all,

Can someone recommend a hot sauce that does NOT contain distilled vinegar? I react to vinegar and alcohol derived from gluten grains, and I would like very much to find a good hot sauce that uses apple cider vinegar -- but I haven't located one yet. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Thai Kitchen Spicy Thai Chili has rice vinegar, is marked gluten free, and I did a home gluten test on it with a 10 ppm sensitivity that was negative. It also doesn't make me sick and I also react to grain vinegars. It will be in the international section. It is in a fairly tall bottle. Hope it works for you.

I believe Victoria's hot sauce actually says gluten free on the bottle. I can't remember if it has vinegar or not.

Franks hot sauce is gluten-free

Sailing Girl Apprentice

Thanks very much for all your suggestions.

I'm not sure I can use the Frank's hot sauce, as they do not identify the source of the vinegar. They can say "gluten free" for distilled vinegar even if it's derived from gluten grains, but that doesn't stop me from reacting to the tiny amount of gluten left after distillation. I also react to grain-based alcohol (and really horribly, too -- so much so that I won't challenge either grain vinegars or grain alcohol anymore!).

I found another possibility in Fresh Market last night -- Busha Browne's Pukka Hot Pepper Sauce. It also says "gluten free," and the ingredients list cane vinegar. I've emailed them to make sure the only vinegar in the sauce is from sugar cane. If/when they respond, I'll post their response.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
