Last night I sat down and ate a bunch of pumpkin seeds (without shell) and at about 1:30 am this morning I woke up with severe D...and it has continued since. I never had this problem before (new celiac as of 1/9/09), so I am a little upset.

My guess is I should lay off nuts/seeds for awhile to let my intestines heal a bit...am I correct in this thinking?

I'd say your problem isn't indulging, it's overindulging. Nuts and seeds are probably fine, as long as you don't eat a BUNCH of them! We do tend to be sensitive to high amounts of fiber early in the diet, try to use nuts and seeds as accessories instead of meals .

It could also be an allergy... my daughter is allergic to pumpkin seeds.

Have you tried other seeds? I understand if you're nervous about it <_< but pumpkin seeds are biologically very different from things like sunflower seeds or sesame seeds.

LOL when I say a bunch...I am meaning about a cup and a half of seeds with the shell before I took shell off....(for me that is a bunch)....wasn't enough for a meal. It could be that it is to many for me though...I don't eat them often and before diagnosis I always had D...so I wasn't sure what was causing it.

I was just surprised b/c since going gluten free have had no D at all (it has been fabulous let me tell ya)...35 years of D has been annoying to say the least.

We they ones you roasted yourself? There are companies that use gluten in the processing or flavoring mixes.

For me it's not tolerating the fiber in them...I think.

In any form of nuts or seeds, even gluten-free, I start getting some serious cramps if I eat more than a handful or 2!

You really do need to check any kind of seeds or nuts you buy for gluten. It is pretty commonly used in the coatings of the seeds/nuts. Especially in mixed varities. Yeast or autolyzed yeast is in the coatings on several brands I've seen. Also be careful of seeds/nuts from overseas where the rules on labeling for allergens might be different.

      Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. This article may be helpful: The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.  Unfortunately many doctors, including my own doctor at the time, don't do extensive follow up testing for a broad range of nutrient deficiencies, nor recommend that those just diagnosed with celiac disease take a broad spectrum vitamin/mineral supplement, which would greatly benefit most, if not all, newly diagnosed celiacs. Because of this it took me decades to overcome a few long-standing issues I had that were associated with gluten ataxia, for example numbness and tingling in my feet, and muscle knots--especially in my shoulders an neck. Only long term extensive supplementation has helped me to resolve these issues.

      Absolutely my point with Kerrigan, the owner. She stood to secure many years of faithful patronage by simply inviting us in for a pastry or lunch. Or by simply producing another $50 e-card based on trust. We would have been highly satisfied. We are limited to a few restaurants in the area, and that would have been one. It was very disappointing, esp to my wife, to realize we can't patronize the place anymore.
