Help - Daughter Losing Weight.....

Hi

I have not posted here often but need some help. I have an almost 3 year old who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in May of 2008. Prior to that she stopped eating and drinking and went down to 17lbs... and was put on a feeding tube to survive. She ha been doing better after being gluten free but in the last month we have taken her off the feeding tube after cutting back slowly and when we cheked her weight today she had lost 1 lb 2 oz in three weeks. I am afraid for her and i am going to start the feeding tube again tonight but my main concern is that if she is getting adequate calories and I have a dietician working with us who I emailed her eating for the last week to see but I am sure she is getting enough why would she still be losing weight.

My other thing is could it be that she is somehow getting gluttened and it is stopping her from getting the nutrients from the food she is eating. But we do watch for things like this and she has never had any outward signs of celiac disease beside losing weight and tellking us her tummy hurt sometimes - no bloating, no diahrea etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bonnie - Genna's mom

One more thing - she is having behavioral issues as well...

The tummy hurting and behavioral issues could be a sign that she's getting glutened or maybe cross-contamination. It may help if you post what she's eating.

Thanks - she does not complain about her tummy hurting now that was early on in 2008 when we first found out... She is not complaining at all in the last 4 or 5 months.

Multivitamins are generally not potent enough to effective address significant deficiencies.

Try a multivitamin maybe it will cover what you are deficient in.

Agreed, and I can't remember exactly and haven't got time to check, but I think my blood didn't normalise for eight years! For years I read this forum thinking why can't I get my numbers down - everyone else manages to.   But my gastroenterologist didn't seem to worry about it, which makes me think he either thought I wasn't complying to the diet, or he'd seen similar cases.

Yes, being off gluten for 3 months would likely yield negative results. To get accurate testing redone you would need to restart gluten consumption for several weeks (the "gluten challenge") to the tune of at least 10g of gluten daily (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread).

That is one of the tests covered in the article I linked you above.
