Natural Remedies For Throat/sinus Infection After Cc

Has anyone else here gotten a bad throat/sinus or lung infection after being CC'd with gluten? This happened to me last year and now once again! I got this bug I seemed previously to be immune to for over two weeks, now worse than anyone else in my family--for me I immediately got copious yellow phlegm whereas theirs is just white.

I have discovered the hard way that the period of time I am suffering from having been glutened makes me a lot more likely to get sick from a virus or bacterial infection. If I take good care of myself with down-time both while I feel bad and a couple of days after then I am unlikely to get sick. This time however my 2 brothers and mother were already ill with this bug, so I was thoroughly exposed when I finally got glutened, once again from a kiss! From an old boyfriend who brushed his teeth this time, but failed to tell me he didn't rinse his teeth afterwards. This after he had just eaten a subway sandwich. Four hours later I had both a Gluten reaction and a searing sore throat! By morning my phlegm was bright yellow! And I was out for the count...

Yesterday, after I had been ill with this for over a week with little or no improvement, I finally got some herbs from a friend which is helping me combat the infection and thin the mucous. Namely sage, peppermint, chapparral and elder along with the marshmallow root, cleavers and barberry I already was using as well as apple cider vinegar and occasionally fresh lemon juice sweetened with stevia in a tall glass of water. The new herbs helped induce a fever all night long, which probably was a good thing though painful. Today I started using fresh garlic again in my chicken vegetable soup (I had run out of garlic). Gradually I am feeling a little better and somewhat less mucousy, a good sign but I am not out of the woods yet.

I plan to use a neti pot treatment with warm water and 1/4 to 1/2 tsp sea salt I just read about, though tonight I'll just use a small teapot I have with a little salt.

Either tonight or tomorrow morning I am going to try this outrageous solution of "oil pulling" which I figure will help remove not only some of the infection but also fungus and the residual after effects of being glutened. Many people apparently swear by its health effects and certainly it is cheap.

Apparently one uses a tablespoon of olive or sesame or sunflower oil, depending on what agrees best with you. Just don't use an oil for this stored in a plastic bottle. You put the oil in a clean mouth (they suggest scraping the tongue first and/or brushing with baking soda or even castille soap and then rinse), four hours away from food. Sometimes putting a drop of peppermint oil in the tablespoon of oil is good to counteract possible harsh Herxheimer effects. Often its easiest at the end of the day or the beginning. Swish for up to 20 minutes til the oil becomes white and spit out. Do not swallow the oil! Then clean mouth with baking soda and water and drink a couple of glasses of water. They suggest using some apple cider vinegar in the water, both 1/2 hour before and after.

The oil pulling pulls out toxins they say, especially congestion in the nasal passages and lungs plus whitens the teeth. It is supposed to be great for pulling out fungal as well as bacterial infections by the way. Has anyone here tried this??

I really don't want to end up having to use antibiotics like I did last year, when finally the infection from my lungs migrated to my kidneys.

Any thoughts, experience on any or all this from others? I am so tired of being ill from the past (pre going off all trace glutens). I have had celiac since I was an infant and used to get ill chronically from these sorts of infections after I was reintroduced to glutenous grains at age 4. The last 9 months I have been free of it thankfully and I don't want this to become another lost winter/spring saga...!! And if I can avoid the antibiotics, I really want to since I am allergic to most of them except for the expensive artificially created ones...and want to save the few I can have in case I have a real emergency.

Sounds like you are doing all you can - of course no gluten at all would be the best !

When there are colds around or I feel the least bit sinus-y I am ULTRA careful around gluten (I'm the only celiac in a house of 5). I have also found that avoiding dairy at these times is a good idea. When my sinuses are already sensitive it doesn't seem to take much to trigger them. I get a lot of headaches - often that's my fist clue I've had some gluten. Add dairy to that & I'm hooped ! I'm talking BIG headaches - Tylenol barely touches them, Advil works better but that's harder on the stomach.

When the sinuses are really bad - I take a non drowsy sinus pill - I get it behind the counter at Walmart (Exact brand). I think it just hits the inflammation. I pretty much only do this if I have to work - I work at a pool and that can bother already cranky sinuses too. I have been meaning to get a neti pot...

I guess I'd add getting rest & lots of fluids.

Thanks Northern Elf. Yes I am in bed quite a lot resting and sleeping. Not doing much but taking care of myself.

The oil pull seems to really have an effect. Immediately cleared my sinuses last night. My teeth and gums by the way feel great. However it also activated my lymphs in my chest so I was unable to sleep. Tried it again this morning. Am going to do the neti pot thing again. Took hot bath and hot soup, tea, apple cider vinegar etc.

Am worried actually that it might be bacterial at this point. I hope not but it keeps resurging with a vengeance after it seems its better. Am going to keep at the oil pull etc. and see what happens. If I don't get enough improvement in two or three days I am going to consider antibiotics even though I hate the thought.

As far as the gluten thing goes, I have decided to keep my mouth under lock and key during this part of the winter especially!! It was a year ago I got so sick from a bacterial infection. Same basic cause...!! Different guy.

      Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.

      @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

      No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

      @Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test.       I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played
