Hello,

I'm new here! I've been reading posts for the last couple months but and even though some of my questions are continually discussed I wanted to ask a few more specific questions to see what anyone thinks.

So, I have pretty much the same complaint as everyone else, I was diagnosed 2 months ago by blood test and I've been gluten free since then and I still feel awful.

My main symptoms are insomnia, every gastrointestinal symptom possible (nausea, heart burn, indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation if I'm not having diarrhea, and other than that just generally feeling awful.

I know I'm not been cross contaminated.

I have also fully eliminated dairy. coffee and a variety of other foods that seem to make me more ill.

I've tried ultrainflamx which is a powder with vitamins, L glutamine and other stuff that is supposed to reduce gut inflammation. but it seemed to make me worse.

I have been taking probiotics and digestive enzymes with meals, as well as a B12 supplement and iron supplement. I have noticed that my heart burn and indigestion have gotten a lot worse and I read that too many probiotics can cause some of those problems so I've cut back a bit on those (1 every second day).

I have tried Specific carb like diets but I struggle to digest most of the foods that they recommend eating. For example, most vegetables, even if cooked well give me diarrhea and I can only eat small servings of fruit (I banana a day). So I really just felt worse taking this approach cause it's so high in fiber.

I also have done an elimination type diet, but I still felt awful so I just started reintroducing foods anyway and I couldn't seem to identify any safe foods.

Also I went to a walk in clinic to complain and they sent me off with some prescription acid reflux pills (prevacid), these seemed to make me feel worse so I stopped taking them after two days.

I also have done a blood test that's supposed to measure all of my food sensitivities. It was impossible to decide what to eat or not based on it because I turned out to be high sensitivity to every food on the list equally ( I think this is a leaky gut problem) so that was just a waste of 500 bucks.

So my question is, does anyone know any very easy foods to digest that I could eat until I'm feeling better? Despite my tummy aches I still get hungry so something besides soup would be helpful. Also, what do you think of my combination of supplements? I know some of them can cause problems so how can I balance the risks/benefits? Ex. probiotics vs. heart burn problem (I've read this about digestive enzymes too). Also, I turn to Tums and Pepto Bismol sometimes, which I know is bad because it reduces acid which helps with B12 absorption and other stuff.

Thanks for your help,

Nicole

Hi Nicole, and welcome to the forum.

When I first went gluten free I went really easy on the supplements, because I found that a lot of them bothered me. I would only take one at a time, and if that one was okay I would try adding another after a week or so. When you add in a whole bunch of stuff st once you can't tell what is bothering you. The most important thing is to eliminate the gluten and let the gut heal, IMHO, and then restore all your deficiencies. Stewed apples are generally well tolerated; you might even try some baby foods initially and see how you handle those. A lot of us find that soy becomes a problem after we eliminate gluten, so I would be very careful of that too. I can't even handle the soy lecithin in chocolate.

It is a problem when your gut is so inflamed and reactive to so many things. Just try to be as gentle with it as you can. Have you tried yogurt? Some of us are lactose intolerant only and can handle yogurt. Test yourself and see.

I still take GasEx for bloating to relieve the gas pressure because I am still not healed 15 months down the road. I don't know how long you have been having symptoms, but generally the longer you have had them the longer it takes to heal. It does require a lot of patience.

If you have other questions or other information to provide, do let us know. Other posters will have other advice for you too.

Just hang in there and be very gentle with yourself.

Hi Nicole,

I agree with mushroom sounds like you need to be very simple to let your gut heal...the stewed apples sound like a good idea, or you could consider stewed pears (they're apparently less acidic???)

you mentioned soup, have you considered congee? this is about 3/4 c rice, 9 cups of light broth (chicken or veggie would be best) and a teaspoon of salt....bring the rice and broth to a boil then reduce heat to medium low, cover but allow the steam to vent and cook for about 1 - 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. it should resemble creamy porridge in the end. Add salt and stir.

We use this when we are sick in my house. if you can tolerate it you can also try mashing hard boiled egg yolk into the cooked congee for some protein.

I'd also be careful with bananas; they are a prebiotic and if added with a probiotic, you can get a lot of bloating and discomfort.

You always want to try and git rid of some of the bad bacteria, so when the good guys get down there, they have a place to live. I'd recommend enteric coated peppermint pills and then about 3 - 4 hours later take some probiotics.

I'd also agree with the first two previous posts. You don't wanna over do it with anything. After everything I have read, it really all comes down to "Everything in moderation" - minus gluten of course :).

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.

It could be a fructan intolerance? How do you do with dates?  https://www.dietvsdisease.org/sorry-your-gluten-sensitivity-is-actually-a-fructan-intolerance/

Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!
