Feeling Like Youre In A Dream?

Before you were diagnosed with Celiac Disease and went on a gluten free diet, did you ever feel like you were in a dream? or that life just didnt feel real?

Im not talking about a good feeling, Im talking about like in a bad dream or a nightmare that you cant wake up from while your life wastes away. I havent been officially diagnosed yet, so Im still eating a lot of gluten and I feel like this sometimes. Its like sleepwalking, or being half asleep.

Its almost all the time for me, but sometimes more intense than others. Theres a lot of times specifically that I remember when I actually thought I was dreaming, I thought I was going to wake up and never did. I remember I went on a supposed vacation, and the whole time I was there it felt like I was dreaming, but no matter how hard I tried I couldnt wake up or shake that feeling. Then theres the times that I felt like I was the only real person, and everybody else was fake and just put there for me to test me maybe. I find myself shocked at my life thinking things like "Who am I?", "How am I 18 already?", "Everybody looks different", "This cant be real", "Is this really me?". A lot of times when I wake up I forgot who I am or am shocked when the memories come back and think this must be a dream.

Anyone ever feel like that before or have a similar experience? Did it go away after you went on a completely gluten free diet?

This sounds like the brain fog I have felt most of my life. I actually have "pretended" to remember funny situations or gatherings, that I have no memory of taking place. I truely don't remember my honeymoon in Aruba!!

When I went totally gluten-free, I was able to remember things that have happened since going gluten-free but, the previous memories have not returned from b-4 diagnosis. I hope you are different.

You are young enough that you will remember a lot of important events, and I am glad for you. Are you awaiting a diagnosis before going gluten-free? After you try being totally gluten-free for a week, you may notice an improvement in the memory area.

Good Luck!

P.S. Also see the brain fog thread that is going on now or search brain fog.

Yes,

and

Yes. I was in a fog for the better part of 44 years. It didn't manifest quite the same as yours, but it was extremely awful, and I lost decades.

Stay strong, and hold on.....when are you planning on going gluten-free? Are you awaiting an official diagnosis?

Your life will change dramatically on a gluten-free diet. Just watch and see. :)

Gluten is an opioid polypeptide - google that and see what you find. It will make more sense to you then.

Let us know how things go!

For those who are wondering, Im going to be eating gluten at least until I get the last test done. Its the upper endoscopy in a few days.

I felt like I would give the official diagnosis one real try before going completely gluten free. I feel the actual diagnosis would make things a lot easier for me as far as it being official and people believing me and supporting me. Ive been eating a lot of gluten for nearly 2 months now (before that I had still been eating gluten normally for 6 months), and I got the blood tests for Celiac Disease done about a month ago, it came back negative. I have an upper endoscopy about 4 days from now.

Im hoping to get the positive diagnosis for that, but if I dont theres nothing else I can do get the actual diagnosis because I would have already had the blood tests done and the endoscopy. Whether it comes back positive or negative, I will be going gluten free as soon as I get the results back from it. So if all goes well, I should start my gluten free diet within 1 month from now. Im very much looking forward to it, getting the actual diagnosis would have just been a bonus for me, but I dont really need it. Im 95% sure that I do have Celiac Disease.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
