Heel Cartilage

When I was in elementary school, I had a problem with my heel. From what I remember, the cartilage on the bottom was loose, and when I walked it would rub against the bone. I had to limit activity and try not to run on hard surfaces for a while. Does anyone know what this was and if it was related to celiac at all?

I've never heard of anyone else having that problem -- my doctor was baffled. But, yes, my heel bone got bruised just from walking around when I was younger, too. I was supposed to wear really snug shoes so it wouldn't rub, but that didn't actually help. I spent a good chunk of time in fourth grade limping, but I was fine when I wasn't wearing shoes. Eventually, it just went away, but I had it for several months -- possibly even the whole school year. It was a long time ago, so I can't be completely sure. I do remember my doctor told me to take advil for the pain, and I thought advil tasted like candy, so I loved that part of the whole thing.

I honestly doubt it had anything to do with Celiacs... I would chalk it up to a bizarre and badly-synchronized growth spurt or something. But who knows... It's definitely interesting to see I'm not the only one who had this.

I have had foot problems for years. I had surgery to remove excess cartilage around my right heel and outside ankle bone, but it didnt' help much. I have been on crutches, walking with a cane, in a wheelchair (the problem is now in both my ankles and knees) and doctors are baffled. They know something is wrong but for five years have sent me to every specialist in the province, with no luck. I now just do physio and keep myself at a moderate activity level, but I do walk with a limp and my ankel goes out frequently.

Probably not related to celiac disease but strange to hear that others have had problems.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
