Can Dairy Products Cause The Same Affects As Being Glutened?

Hello Everyone,

I have been gluten free for almost 2 months, and I am feeling better but I still have really bad days. About a week ago I decided to stop eating dairy products to see if it would help. I accidentally ate some cheese last night and this morning I feel horrible. Almost like someone has beaten me up. My entire body is sore especially my ribcage and my chest. And my neck is so sore I can barely move it side to side. I was just wondering if dairy products can have the same affect as gluten on your body? I'm totally new to all of these problems. My medical issues started in January of this year. I'm so tired of feeling this way, I just want to feel better.

Thank you for responses,

TIFF :)

For me, both gluten and lactose cause diarrhea, gas, bloating. Only difference is the lactose acts a lot quicker!!

I feel the exact same way mushroom does! I feel the lactose within minutes. I feel the gluten the next day. I always, always take Lactaid before I consume dairy, especially ice cream. I wish someone would invent Glutenaid to take before you consume gluten!

As mentioned above, lactose causes gas, bloating and diarrhea if you're lactose intolerant. All three (as also mentioned) can be resolved with Lactaid. However, you might also be sensitive to casein, the protein component in milk. As many as half of celiacs are. Try cutting out all dairy and see if that helps. (Warning: they slip casein in everywhere, including cheese substitutes that are labeled non-dairy.)

Edit: I did a similar thread a few weeks ago seeking help: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...c=59874&hl= Some of the replies are really terrific.

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
