Heliobacter Pylori

Hi all,

I found out today that I have heliobacter pylori bacteria in my stomach and a low grade yeast infection in my intestine. :o I have to be on two weeks of antibiotics and other medications. Also found out that my blood anti-gliadin and anti-transglutaminase tests are normal.( 15.9 for IgG antigliadin and 10 for ant-transglutaminase,14 for anti-gliadinIgA). Abnormal is over 20. My Doc said that its because I have been gluten free for 6 months and that she is sure they would have been above normal back then. Thats good news.

So I have the celiac gene but not full blown disease. I have gluten intolerance for now. My bone density tests and other bloodwork are normal. Yeah! :D

I think that after I take care of these infections I should be feeling better and hopefully not have the attacks that I have had. I am going to eat really clean for the next couple of weeks to support my body in fighting these infections.

So I need to stay off gluten forever or else I risk getting celiac in the future, right? Can't you still get damage to your body even if you don't show intestinal damage? There is so much conflicting information out there.

Thanks for listening,

June

If you have been gluten-free for 6 months prior to testing that will not give accurate results. Therefore you can not determine that you do not have it now. You very well could. If your doctor said she thinks 6 months ago they would have been above normal why didn't she test you then? Yes you can still get damage even if it showed you don't have any YET. Catching it before you get damage is ideal. You should definitely stay gluten free.

Kaiti,

She was not my doctor then. I am going to her out of pocket since my regular doc

doesn't know about gluten.

By the way, to anyone who has talken meds for heliobacter, did you have vomiting along with it? I had green diarrhea and uncontrollable vomiting this morning. I had to go home sick. :(

Hi Jean:

How were they able to determine you had bacteria and a yeast infection?

Thanks

June,

I had the treatment for h-pylori bacteria. I took two different antibiotics for two weeks and eight Pepto Bismol tablets per day. I had nausea all of the time. Of course, I can't stand Pepto. I also had severe diarrhea from the antibiotics. My stool was black from the Pepto.

I would say that you need to stay on a gluten-free diet to keep from damagining your intestines.

Good luck and feel better!

Hi Sally and all,

I had a stool test and blood test for the H. Pylori and blood test for the yeast. The yeast test was for D-Arabinitol which is metabolite produced by candida. A normal value is 1-5 and mine was 5.8. I'm going to try to take caprylic acid to suppress the yeast while I am on the antibiotics. I also am eating soy yogurt.

I ate 2 bananas and applesauce and today my diarrhea is better and I'm not vomiting. I am taking drops of licorice root too for the nausea. :P

I'm not thrilled with taking antibiotics but H. Pylori is a class one carcinogen and I don't want to get stomach cancer in the future.

I plan to take mastic gum after the antibiotics are through. It suppresses the bacteria.

Thanks for listening. :D

By the way Kaiti I am definitely staying gluten free. Thanks.

Sincerely,

June

My Doctor messaged me that I have no sign of Celiac disease so until I meet with her next week I don’t know what the labs mean. I am being evaluated by my new GI for Celiac disease because of digestive issues (bloating, distention, fullness in mid section, diarrhea).  I also have been diagnosed with GERD and some associated issues hence the endoscopy. I also was diagnosed with NAFLD after an abdominal CT scan in December - which surprises me because I gave up alcohol 5 years ago, workout 5 days a week, cardio / weights and cook from scratch every night. Anecdotally,  I do feel better when I do not eat a lot of carbs and have been staying away from gluten 95% of the time until my follow up.  History: I had an emergency bowel obstruction operation in August 2021 for a double closed loop obstruction, open surgery removed 40 cm of my small intestine, my appendix, cecal valve and illeocectomy. Beside the fact that this put me in the situation of no longer being able to absorb Vitamin B12  from my diet and having to  inject Vit B 12 2x a month, I also became Iron deficient and am on EOD iron to keep my levels high enough to support my Vitamin B12 injections, as well as daily folic acid. I tested positive for pernicious anemia in 2022 but most recently that same test came back negative. Negative Intrinsic Factor. My results from the biopsies showed 2nd part of Duodenum, small bowel Mildly patch increased intraepithelial lymphocytes with intact villious architecture. Comment: Duodenal biopsies with normal villous architecture and increased intrepithelial lymphocytes (Marsh I lesion) are found in 1-3% of patients undergoing duodenal biopsy, and an association with celiac disease is well established however the specificity remains low. Similar histologic findings may be seen in H pylori gastritis, NSAID and other medication use including olmesartan, bacterial overgrowth, tropical sprue and certain autoimmune disorders. So my GI ordered Labs for Celiac confirmation: Sorry I couldn’t upload a photo or pdf so typed below: TEST NAME                               IN RANGE and/or RESULTS RESULTS:  IMMUNOGLOBULIN A :           110 GLIADIN (DEAMIDATED) AB (IGG, IGA)                            <1.0 GLIADIN (DEAMIDATED) AB (IGA)                                     <1.0 GLIADIN (DEAMIDATED) AB (IGG)                                    <1.0 TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE ANTIBODY, IGG, IGA TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE AB, IGG                                     <1.0 TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE AB, IGA                                     <1.0 INTERPRETATION: <15.0 ANTIBODY NOT DETECTED  > OR = 15.0 ANTIBODY DETECTED RESULTS: HLA TYPING FOR CELIAC DISEASE INTERPRETATION (note The patient does not have the HLA-DQ associated with celiac disease variants) More than 97% of celiac patients carry either HLA-DQ2 (DQA1*05/DQB1*02) or HLA-DQ8 (DQA1*03/DQB1*0302) or both. Let me hasten to add that if you will be undergoing an endoscopy/biopsy, it is critical that you do not begin efforts to reduce gluten beforehand. Doing so will render the results invalid as it will allow the small bowel lining to heal and, therefore, obscure the damage done by celiac disease which is what the biopsy is looking for.

That’s a really tough situation. A few key points: as mentioned, a gluten challenge does require daily gluten for several weeks to make blood tests meaningful, but negative tests after limited exposure aren’t reliable. Dermatitis herpetiformis can also be tricky to diagnose unless the biopsy is taken from normal-looking skin next to a lesion. Some people with celiac or DH don’t react every time they’re exposed, so lack of symptoms doesn’t rule it out. Given your history and family cancer risk, this is something I’d strongly discuss with a celiac-experienced gastroenterologist or dermatologist before attempting a challenge on your own, so risks and benefits are clearly weighed.

https://celiac.org/glutenexposuremarkers/    yes, two hours after accidents ingesting gluten I am vomiting and then diarrhea- then exhaustion and a headache. see the article above- There is research that shows our reactions.
