Went For My Follow Up Yesterday!

In Nov my brother was diagnosed with celiac and we were advised to be tested. My old Dr. refused since I "looked healthy" so I called my gyn and she ran the test for me. I posted my results on this board several in Dec and got wonderful feedback while I was waiting for my follow up with my new Dr. yesterday. She was wonderful. 2 days a month she accepts new patients and spends about an hour with each and had actually read over the paperwork I had filled out and sent in.

On to the important stuff--I am gluten intolerant and she actually said "Look the test is positive, we can do the biopsy if you want celiac as a diagnosis and it may or may not be positive depending on many factors. The treatment is the same--give up gluten!" No surprise after reading these boards for awhile.

The surprise however for me was the fact that the nurse in the gyn office had marked the wrong DNA test and the test used for lupus came back positive! She is running an ANA test to see where I am. The other surprise was when they ran the EKG and my resting heart rate was 45 bpm (and I'm definitely not a high performance athlete.)

I know from the boards that there is often a link between lupus and celiac-has anyone had experience with this and/or a very low resting heart rate? Since both are inflammatory conditions do you think the diet will help me from getting flare-ups? Thanks in advance for any help.

I also forgot to ask about vitamins--Does anyone have any recommendations? I figured from what I've read the B vit would be good, but I don't know what else.

Thanks.

I just reat at the delphi celiac forum today that someone cited that her doctor said that about 40% or was it half of celiacs have postive ANA and that one needs more test to decide if it is lupus. The positive ANA is a celiac thing.

vitamins--get the D tested. Typically low in celiac. Vitamin D is important re. autoimmune diesases, it normalizes the immune system.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
