Fixing One Problem Causes Another

After I went on the gluten free diet my immune system was board so it started attacking my thyroid. Now I have decided to quit smoking, but I am running into another problem. Without those cigarettes to suppress my immune system my hashimoto's feels like it's getting worse. That little buldge in my neck is getting bigger and it hurts. So what now? Every time I make an effort to improve my health it backfires on me. Sometimes I wish I never got dx with celiac.

I have Hashi's and if you feel like the thyroid dose you are on is not enough, have your blood work done to see what your levels are. Are you taking any hormone for this problem or have you not gone there yet? The most important thing you can do is stay strictly gluten free because that should slow down the attack on your thyroid by calming down your immune system overall.

A word of warning....when you quit smoking, sometimes other health problems appear. I quit smoking 4 months before diagnosis and all hell broke out with my Celiac problems after I quit. It became more apparent. I am not sure to the extent of which smoking suppresses your immune system. I know it can but I also do not believe it suppresses it as much as cortico-steroids do. Smoking absolutely did not prevent my thyroid from almost being trashed....the gluten-free diet did.

Good luck to you on quitting but don't beat yourself up too much over it. Giving up gluten and then giving up cigarettes can be difficult because many people feel a deep sense of loss. I miss cigarettes 100% more than I ever missed gluten. I would see someone about your thyroid, though, whatever you decide to do.

Hey me too! :D

The way I understand it Hashimoto's symptoms can be greater when a person is glutened. So staying well clear of the gluten should help. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get an ultrasound done though.

You might want to try get some DPP-IV (DPP-4) also, to help when you get glutened. I don't have Hashimmotto's but it helps me some with glutenening symptoms.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
