Hi, I need some assistance here. I am gluten,dairy,soy and shrimp free after going through a long time of not feeling well at all and spending some time in the hospital from anaflaxia.

I also have Cerebral Palsy. Which my alergies make that hard to deal with because my muscles react along with the allergic reaction. What can I eat?????

I love to eat sweet potatoes. Kale. Quinoa. Salad. Chicken. Lamb. Flax seed. Fish. Sqaushes like acorn , butternut, delacotta I know it sounds really boring but you get used to it. Pretty much avoid anything processed or pre packaged even if it says gluten free it may have some slight contaminationwhich will set you back. Right now I'm trying to keepbit really basic until I get better so I can tell what I react to and what I don't because I've heard of people reacting to even rice Definatly no processed corn. no dairy. I'm no expert but thought I'd share what I'm allowing myself to eat. I call it the 500 year diet. If they didn't eat it 500 years ago I won't eat it.

one of my best friends has CP and he is a great person. He has problems with insomnia and depression ect... So I've tryed to get him to consider giving gluten-free a try to see if it gets better but he seems kinda stubborn about it so far

hang in there and you will learn to love eating ths way. It takes more effort but I feel like you will do better

Kudos for using this board and there is a lot of help and support here and you will learn a lot reading the posts and articles and such

Check out the cooking board too. If you can still eat grains, try a variety of new ones. Quinoa, rice, wild rice, millet, amaranth, corn, and buckwheat (kashi) are all options. Vegetables and fruit are great-- substitute sweet potatoes and potatoes in for grains. Beans are also a great source of carbohydrates and protein. Lentils cook fast, canned beans are instant (check for additional ingredients before buying).

What did you eat pre-restrictions? Lots of ethnic foods are easy to make EXCEPT soy-based Asian food.

I was your basic junk food junkie!! I was raised on a lot of ethnic foods. Then I got out on my own and there was really nothing I wouldn't try at least once. Then I started getting sick and trying to keep up with life in general. The doctor told me for years that it was the simple fact that I have CP. When I landed in the hospital.

It was a stoke of luck that my symtoms were that of an allergic reaction. So they ran a allergy panel and low and behold Iwas allergic to almost every thing I eat. Most meds and a whole list of medications.

I didn't really know how to react. I told the doctor over and over some thing was wrong and I was right.

People with CP or a disability in general tend to try and control what they can. Ask your friend if he/she? would feel much better if they could sleep though the night with out being blown out of bed with muscle spasms?!

talked to my friend, he said he has some muscle tension that keeps him awake, and a racing mind prob doesn't help either. i found out recently that a magnesium deficiency could be a cause of insomnia. geuss what? gluten sensitivity could cause the deficiency, which reminds me; make sure you are getting omega oils, like fish oil, and sublingual B12 is a must, I also take calcium and a multi-vitimin, i understand vit D is important for us,

He said CP is why he has muscle spasms, but i've had similar experiences with panic/anxiety attacks, and i mean real ones, scary ones, and I don't have CP. who knows. anyways, I told him about your post, so I hope it helps him consider dropping the gluten as an experiment! peace, R

Racing thoughts is just part of CP.So is depression. It has some thing to do with the part of the brain that was damaged causing the CP in the first place anxiety is part of it too. I think it has some thing to do with people not taking us seriously.

We are easily dismissed because we have CP. Bugs the snot out of me! I tell ya! I had to go head to head with my doctor yesturday. I was quickly told I am the most pig headed woman he knew! I told him that is how I get my point a cross.

The main thing is to keep trying I guess. Tell your friend that if his grand experiment doesn't work the worst thing that could happen is it would give him room in his jeans to go on a junk food binge! I lost 45 pds in 3 months getting of gluten. I am starting to turn around a little the problem is because of the muscle tenssion we use so much energy twice the average person.

Chocolate is gluten free I live off it!! :D

      Thanks a lot for your response! Can you maybe specify which kind of cheeses I should be cautious about? Camembert/Brie and blue cheeses (the molds of which are nowadays mostly grown on gluten-free media, though, so I've read, right?) or other ones as well? Also, I was under the impression that yeast is generally gluten-free if not declared otherwise. Is that false?

      Hi @trents, yes I've had my levels checked in Dec 2025 which revealed vit D deficiency. I considered eggs although they only contain about 45 IU vitamin D/egg. I need 2000 IU vitamin D for maintenance as per my doctor. Although now, I likely need way more than that to treat the deficiency. My doctor has yet to advise me on dosing for deficiency. I've also considered cod liver oil, although again, if it's processed in a facility that has gluten, especially on flour form, I worried to test it, even if they have protocols in place to mitigate cross-contamination with gluten.

      Welcome to celiac.com, @Jane02! Have you had your serum D levels checked for deficiency/sufficiency? What about cod liver oil? Egg yolks can also be a good source of vitamin D.

      Hello, I'm very discouraged. I've been trying to find a safe vitamin mineral supplement brand for months and am tired of testing one after the other and experiencing my typical 'glutening' reactions. I'm really feeling the nutritional deficiencies set in. I'm doing the best I can to get these nutrients from my food, although it's impossible for me to intake enough vitamin D as I can't have dairy and have insufficient sun exposure in the northern hemisphere. I've tried B Complex from Country Life (certified gluten-free) - horrible reaction. I've tried Metagenics vitamin D tab (certified glute-free) - bad reaction. I've tried liquid vitamin D Thorne and D Drops - reactions were mild since I tried a drop of a drop. I understand there could be other things I'm reacting to in my diet, although my diet/intake is pretty consistent with minimal variables so I do think it's something in these supplements. I understand I could be reacting to the active ingredient vitamin/mineral itself or even the filler ingredients. I tried the vitamin D drops since the only filler ingredient is coconut oil, in some brands, which I know I can tolerate really well on its own - I cook with coconut oil frequently and have no 'glutening' reactions at all. Perhaps I'm reacting to the vitamin D itself, although I eat fatty fish every few days, an entire fillet with no 'glutening' reactions, which contains anywhere between 400-600 IU per fillet so I shouldn't be sensitive to vitamin D. All this to say, I'm desperately looking for at least a safe vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know of a safe vitamin D supplement brand? I'd love to know if there are any supplement brands that have absolutely no gluten (especially in flour form) in their facilities. I've heard of Kirkman having no grains in their facility - I may try this brand. Has anyone reacted to this brand?
