People Who Live In Gluten-Containing Homes....

I'm staying with my parents until the end of August. The house has crumbs everywhere and I am doing my to stay gluten free. I have my own pots to cook things like gluten free pasta etc and my own small frying pan.I have my own cereal bowl and spoon.

I rinse and dry with kitchen roll any cutlery or delph before using it. I cook the dinner with my mother to ensure it's gluten free. I use tinfoil under the grill for my toast. I haven't had a reaction to anything yet but I am worried.

I do the washing up all the time even though it means handling stuff that has held bread etc, clean down the counter tops and kitchen table which is covered in crumbs. I can't not pull my weight while I'm a guest here. My parents are good about my condition but as long as I'm not putting it in my mouth they won't see what the danger is. I am washing my hands obsessively. Am I doing enough? My 6 month bloods are a couple of days after I return home and I'm scared they will be high.

What more can I do???? What other precautions can I take????

Ok, I live in a house where 2 out of 4 members are gluten free. Myself because of actual intolerance and my 9 yr old daughter because I want to see if gluten free will help in her severe ADHD.

I have my own stainless steel pan and spatula. I am now cooking most of the meals just to be sure. I have a dedicated area in the kitchen for my food (dry goods) and pan. (I say pan because I can't afford to buy but 1 at a time.) I have my own dedicated sponge to wash my dishes with and keep it hidden under the sink just to be sure.

Don't use the same cutting boards or any wooden utensils.

Here is an idea: when washing dishes that are communal wear dish gloves.

I am new to gluten free myself so that is all I can really think of but wanted to share a little of what I have learned because if it weren't for this board I would have given into depression months ago!

Hang in there! :)

Can you politely ask them to be be careful about crumbs and so forth? Also to clean up after themselves. I mean, they would have to clean it up if you weren't there.

Yes they would clean up after themselves if I wasn't here but since I am a guest I feel obliged to help with the chores and the most common chore is washing up.

I think getting gloves for washing up is a good idea. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that. ;)

Unless you have a topical allergy to wheat, there would be no reason to wear gloves. The soap will do it's job if you are washing dishes.

The only other thing I would add, because you are doing everything you need to do, is ask them when eating bread or crumbly items to be careful of flying crumbs. Maybe sit at the other end of the table in that case.

I sit at the end of the table at the opposite end to the bread basket. I hope I'm doing enough.

I would also suggest you relax about it. Life is meant to be enjoyed. If I get panicky, like if I try a new restaurant or new food at an old restaurant I can feel like I've been glutened. Then I calm myself down and the feeling goes away when the panic goes away. I have to deep breathe sometimes at a restaurant when I start to worry.

I know it's easier said than done, but concentrate on it and you will feel better.

Soap and water will take that gluten right down the drain.

Symptoms that get worse if you don't supplement is a sign of malabsorption, possibly due to Celiac disease. Blood tests for nutritional deficiencies are not very accurate, and should be done when you have been off of supplements for eight to twelve weeks, otherwise the vitamin supplements you've taken will be measured.  The blood circulation system is a transportation system.  It transports the vitamins you've absorbed around the body, but blood tests don't give an accurate picture of the vitamin and mineral stores inside organs and tissues where they are actually used.  You can have "normal" blood levels but still have deficiencies.  This is because the brain demands stored nutrients be put into the blood stream to supply important organs, like the brain and heart, while other organs do without.   If you are taking Thiamine Mononitrate in your supplements, you are probably low in thiamine.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many supplements because it won't break down sitting on a shelf.  This also means Thiamine Mononitrate is difficult for the body to utilize.  Only thirty percent of Thiamine Mononitrate on the label is absorbed and even less is able to be utilized by the body.  A different form of Thiamine called Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.   Talk to your doctor about doing a genetic test to look for Celiac markers.   I'm concerned that if you do a gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum off two weeks) in your weakened state, the nutritional deficiencies will become worse and possibly life threatening.

Hello, good afternoon!   I apologize, I didn’t see a notification and I’m just reading this. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and the link. Yes you are absolutely right, even so trying to get a response from them has been extremely difficult. They don’t answer but I will your practice of “guilty until proven innocent.”   I like and have a sense of trust here in this website, everyone is honest and thoughts are raw. The mutual understanding is amazing!   thank you Scott!

That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.
