I would probably wait until you order. Just make sure the place you dine at is safe before you go there.

Dude, you're freaking out. You are not telling this girl you have terminal cancer and six months to live! How would you react if a date asked for allergy information and mentioned she has a severe peanut allergy? You might be concerned but it wouldn't be a big deal, right?

Do what you always do in a restaurant. Ask for the gluten-free menu, or for what you can eat and order as usual. You can mention you have celiac and you don't eat any wheat. Answer any questions she has conversationally. Then switch the subject, compliment her, and ask her how her day went.

Couldn't have said it better myself. For all you know you may find her eating off the gluten-free menu also if this is a first date. Don't worry about it, just order as you usually order and enjoy her company.

I completely agree! Just enjoy yourself! Don't put any unneccesary pressure on yourself

Yup, totally over thinking this.

"breaking the news" is what you do when you tell someone you're leaving them. when you tell a friend another friend died. when you tell someone they didn't get the job they want.

This isn't a negative thing; it's just a thing.

"I'm celiac, so I can't eat wheat, barley, rye, or oats. So you'll get to hear me ask a bunch of questions to the waiter/waitress. It won't take too long."

There, done. Information shared.

Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.

I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?

Would it be rude to ask your age?

Wow! Thank you @trents I  really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.
