Are You Traveling To Australia?

Are you traveling to Australia in the near future? Why not check out some of Tasmania's gluten free restaurant options.

I had the pleasure of travelling through Tasmania in July for 2 weeks and found it a really great place to find some beautiful and delicious tasting food that I can eat. Most restaurants catered very well for gluten free meals and I would like to especially mention a few great restaurants that I ate at.

Ulverstone - Pedro's Seafood Restaurant Ph: (03) 64256663

Latrobe - The Cherry Shed

Devonport - Thai Imperial Courthouse - take away or eat in - (03) 64235373

Sandy Bay (Hobart) - Bay Leaf Bistro - (03) 6223 1771

Cleveland, Midland Highway - St. Andrews Inn Coffee House and Cafe Bar - (03) 6391 5525

Hobart (Salamanca Place) - Blue Eye Seafood Restaurant - (03) 62235297

The only place that I was very disappointed in was the Wrest Point Casino (and I told them so on the Customer Feedback Form!!). We were staying there and we went down for a late dinner (8:45 pm!!) and the Bistro was closing and the only place that I could get a meal was the Snack Bar. The staff did not offer any gluten free options except a salad and fries, and after a bit of too-ing and fro-ing I had a steak sandwich (without the bread) and a mediterrean salad. Not really good options from an international establishment. However, I had a win on the roulette table so that made up for the poor meal.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
