Hi guys,

Is Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein safe for us or not? Confused about this one!

Also, I live in South Africa, and am having a real problem sourcing gluten-free make-up. Most of our products here are imported so there is no way for me to check in this country.

I feel like I need to change my lipstick urgently - noticed I lick it a lot!! Also lip ice or lip balm.

Does anyone know if any of the Almay, Revlon, Maybelline or Boots No.7 products are gluten-free and lipstick in particular.

And toothpase? I read somewhere that all Colgate toothpase is gluten-free. Is this correct?

Sorry for all the questions but I glutened myself two nights ago with pork sausages so I'm on a mission to be really vigilant from now on!!

Thanks.

Yvonne

Textured vegetable protein isn't gluten-free for us...

Colgate is close to or completely gluten-free (here in the US, though). Crest is also mostly gluten-free. Beware of Sensodyne and with most of these brands, watch out because the extra whitening and sensitive toothpastes, I have found, are often the ones with gluten. You can't guarantee, though, that Colgate in South Africa or any other country would be the same as in America. Companies change their ingredients from country to country.

Yvonne-

I had to get rid of a ton of my lipsticks, so I understand the frustration. Unfortunately I do not have a detailed list for the each of the brands you mentioned, but someone else might. In the meantime, I e-mailed each of them to get a list. I'll let you know when I hear back. I am sure that some of the their types of lipsticks will NOT be gluten free, its just a matter of if they have a few types that are. Wheat germ oil, wheat are in a lot of lipsticks, and other times we just can't verify if they are gluten-free. Can you receive makeup from Sephora.com in Africa? I would think they have international shipping. They sell a brand Bare Escentuals whose lipstick is ALL gluten-free. I'll let you know if I find something more specific ! :D

Oh--It will probably take a day or 2 to hear back from the companies.

Also, ck out this post for gluten-free lists on chapstick. bonnie bell, blistex in case you use those:

HVP can contain gluten...it depends where it was derived from. If you see Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein it would be unsafe but if you see Hydrolyzed Soy Protein it would be safe. It's one of those tricky ingredients where you have to know what it was made from to determine if it is gluten free.(unless however it is on a label such as Kraft...then they would clearly put beside it if it contains any wheat, rye, barley, oats)

Colgate toothpaste for the most part is gluten free

The lipsticks that I have checked with those companies you mentioned have not been gluten free so I threw them all away and I stick with the Bare Escentuals line because the whole line is gluten free...not sure if you can get that there or order it online from there.

CoverGirls continuous color lipstick shades are gluten free

Maybelline has a few gluten free products but I have not checked on lipsticks for that brand

Bonnie Explorer

Thanks a lot everyone for the replies.

Kaiti, I haven't seen CoverGirl anywhere here. I think Maybelline is my best bet. I will try and find a way to contact them for info. We also have Este Lauder but it's a bit pricey.

Jenvan thanks a lot for finding out from the companies, really appreciate it.

In the meantime I'll check out that link on chapstick. I can get blistex here.

We are so far behind in this country in a lot of ways.

Thanks for a great site and the advice.

I think someone posted this response once before...

Maybelline was a slacker..didn't send me ingredients of lipsticks, but here is a list of their ingredients that do contain gluten. You can get the ingredients for your specific lipstick and compare them to this list. I would e-mail and ask for a list of ingredients for the specific type of lipstick you use:

Neutrogena has a list of gluten free products and quite a few products that are gluten free. I posted on it in the product section a while ago...if you can't find it then you can email me and I'll send it to you.

Not sure if Dove has SPF in their new moisturizers but they will not hide anything on labels so you check for wheat, rye, barley, oats and if it does not have that then they are gluten free

shellfish1974 Newbie

I received a list of gluten-free products from Nutrogena and Aveda. There are some lipsticks on the Nutrogena list which are gluten-free. Aveda's lipsticks contain gluten, but they have some great products that do not.

Thank you that’s really helpful, hopeful won’t have to have a biopsy.

That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.
