Can Dh Come Later? Do You Treat It?

Our daughter was dxed with celiacs a few weeks ago. She has gone through periods of what I thought was diaper rash. But nothing major.

I know she got gluten yesterday (Bad mommy) and today she has a rash all over her bottom. It like tiny blister. She hasnt complained about itching though...

If it is DH does it matter...like should I call a dr?

I would definitely call the GI to see what they have to say.

I have the same thing going on with my 18 mos old. Her rashes are terrible and they are definitely influenced by gluten. We are struggling with a diagnosis (negative panel and negative scope). Wednesday she had skin biopsy (we had to beg the Derm to do it). It started as the diaper rashes but she now has had the blisters on the face, elbows, hands and knees (all the typical DH places) the diaper rashes come and go but the elbows, hands, and knees are now scarred and are not healing, this has been going for 6 months. If you don't mind if I ask....how old is your daughter and how did she get her diagnosis?

Hopefully the doctor biopsied the area next to the lesions not the lesions themselves. If the doctor biopsied the lesion expect it to come back negative.

For the Original Poster:

There isn't much they can do about DH. If a person has celiac and is firmly diagnosed the best thing to do is to be strictly gluten free. There is a med called dapsone that can be given but since it does have some nasty side effects and risks I don't think they would give it to a young child.

In some cases a short term dose of prednisone may help but your doctor would be the one to ask. As a child they would only give it to me once a year. I would then have a month or so rash free but since I wasn't yet diagnosed celiac the rash would of course come right back.

Be as strict as possible with the diet and the lesions will heal in time. It can take a pretty long time for the antibodies to leave the skin layers and even a small amount of gluten will reactivate the lesions. Be patient and be strict.

My daughter will be 3 in Oct. When she was about 12 months they tested her blood for all sorts of things. Celiacs came back negative. The next time they tested about a yr later, again just running a full panel, she doesnt exhibit the "classic symptoms" she was still negative but borderline. They decided to scope her not for celiacs but more looking for polyps or other issues...and her villi were blunted. So they took blood again...about a month ago and it was positive.

So I know in our case at your childs age she was negative..but is now positive. And since making her gluten free and learning more I see how she did have symptoms I just had no idea what to look for. Hugs its so hard to not have the answer for why things are wrong with your child

      Thank you for the update @Rejoicephd it is good to know that you may have some answers.  Keep up the good work with your diet, and do let us know if you do get a firm diagnosis.  I took so long to feel better and for my TTG levels to normalise,  but got there in the end, so also bear in mind it does take longer for some of us.

      Well, three months later and a startling revelation!  After going gluten free (and nearly bankrupt buying special foods), my wife made a lunch of meat potatoes and gravy made with Bertolli white sauce - no wheat there right?  Big flare up withing hours and I was really wiped out with it.  She rechecks the label on the sauce bottle and right at the bottom of the ingredients XANTHAN GUM. There's our #1 suspect again!  So by way of experimenting, she decided to try making a loaf of bread with just regular white flour like she used to do and see what happened; the familiar smell hit me when I walked in the door last night and I sat down to eat this still warm, fresh goodness - I thought even if I have to take Imodium sandwiches, it will be worth it 😋 No ill effects, either overnight or today!  Half the loaf is now gone because I had some for supper, saving just one last slice for breakfast in the morning` - I've used the bathroom once and that was normal, so maybe it is not the gluten after all? Can't wait to try a beer! 😁

      Unfortunately, the development of celiac disease usually is not an end in and of itself. It usually brings along friends, given time. It is at heart an immune system dysfunction which often embraces other immune system dysfunctions as time goes on.

      Thanks so much for the responses. I will urge him to go for further investigation. To be 48yrs old and develop a new allergy.. ugh, As if celiac disease isn’t enough!

      This does not seem to be an anaphylactic response but I agree it would be wise to seek allergy-food sensitivity testing. You might look into ALCAT food sensitivity testing.
