Princess Cruises - Amazing Experience

Hi all,

I just got back from a week's cruise to Alaska on the Diamond Princess. It was an absolutely *amazing* experience (both the trip and the food!!). I have never had a better gluten-free eating experience!

We told them a month in advance that I needed a gluten-free diet (required so that they know how much to buy, I think), but I was so nervous at dinner the first night! We had selected "anytime dining", which lets you choose to eat at any time in any of the restaurants on board. But when I told my waiter, he immediately called over a head waiter/manager, who was so great! He went through the menu with me, and brought over some special gluten-free bread. The easiest for them was for me to "order" a day in advance what I wanted to eat. I could have gone to any of the other restaurants, but had such a great experience with him that I went back to that one the entire cruise! They had amazing french toast -- prob the best gluten-free french toast I've ever had -- and pancakes. The head waiter would bring me over special "treats" -- gluten-free muffins, special desserts, etc! And he was so nice about it -- he really made me feel like we were getting special treatment because of eating gluten-free, instead of the mild irritation I usually get ;)

I haven't tried any of the other cruise lines, but just wanted to put my plug in for them since they were so fantastic!! (and the food was *amazing*!)

Yay! I'm so happy to learn of your positive travel experience! I haven't travelled for over a year, even though I used to be an avid traveler. It's really wonderful that you had a nice, safe cruise. Thanks for sharing. It gives hope ... and hope is a very good thing to have!

That's awesome, and good to know!

I wonder if they can do gluten free *and* low carb though? ;)

Dear Community,  I've been a fan of nuts.com for awhile. As the only company I know of that certify their nuts, I have eaten them faithfully for the last several years! Only recently I noticed on the packaging (of the certified gluten-free nuts) the warning label stating that the product is processed in the same facility as wheat.  I reached out to the company to enquire about the safety of the product and received the following answer:  "Our facility is not allergen-free. We handle all 9 major allergens and produce products on shared equipment. While we have strict procedures in place to minimize cross-contamination, we cannot guarantee that our products are completely free of allergens. We recommend individuals with food allergies to exercise caution and consult our product labels and allergen information for detailed ingredient listings"   I was so disappointed to read this! I already reached out to ask if this means they would not recommend even certified gluten-free products to people with celiac, but wanted to reach out here and ask for your all's thoughts too.  No longer safe to eat? Any other recommendations for good companies?  I have to eat low histsamine, so at the moment, I am limited to pumpkin seeds, pistachios, and macademia nuts.   Thanks in advance for the feedback!

There is no direct evidence that AlgaeCal causes elevated coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores or significantly raises cholesterol levels. However, excessive calcium supplementation—especially without adequate vitamin K2 (which helps direct calcium to bones rather than arteries)—could theoretically contribute to vascular calcification over time, particularly in individuals with absorption issues like celiac disease. Since celiac disease can impair nutrient absorption, it’s possible that imbalances in calcium metabolism or deficiencies in cofactors like vitamin D and K2 might play a role. The spike in your cholesterol is unusual and may not be directly linked to AlgaeCal, but it’s worth discussing with your doctor whether other dietary or metabolic factors (like thyroid function or inflammation) could be influencing both your cholesterol and CAC results. Statins may help manage cholesterol, but further testing (e.g., vitamin K2 status, inflammation markers) could provide more insight into the underlying cause. Always consult your healthcare provider before adjusting supplements or medications.

Some might. Some might not. Why don't you try it? Taste is a very personal and individual thing. I don't know that anyone can speak for you.
