Hey everyone. I'm looking for the name(s) of a few good gluten-free magazines that come out regularly and contain reliable information and are pretty interesting to read. I haven't done much research on it...I'm in the middle of final exams, but if you know of any...would you mind posting the info.? I would like some regularly updated Celiac medical info. and maybe some recipes in the magazine(s) if possible. THANKS A BUNCH! ;) -Julie

Here are two that I read. I have a subscription to Living Without--it is larger than Gluten-Free Living, but it is not only for Celiacs, it also has some articles on other food allergies/intolerances. But each issue has several articles dealing with Celiac, gluten. These are the 2 I know of. Some places, like Wild Oats where I live, sells each magazine when the issues comes out. I also like Living Without because it always has quite a few recipes in the magazine, which are gluten free. You can check them out here:

Oh, a little more... gluten-free Living might have more consistent info for you on gluten... And I'd also say Living Without might be helpful for a parent, b/c it has articles on dealing with your children's intolerances, schools etc...

Do you get the newsletter from this website or from Clan Thompson? That is another way to get good updated medical-type info. (Open Original Shared Link)

Clan Thompson newsletters are very informative. I check out that site occasionally for info.

I agree with the Gluten Free Living suggestion...thats a good magazine :D

I really like the Living Without magazine. It's nice because it often has recipes & such dealing with *other* food allergies (that seem to be common to celiacs) - they usually have a couple in there that exclude dairy or eggs in their ingredients. Also - though it isn't specifically for celiacs, I've found that a huge portion of it deals with gluten intolerance. They have lots of ads for gluten-free products & such.

I've been kind of wary of Gluten free Living because they seem to suggest scary things! I know that the board on this magazine is highly respected, but has anyone else noticed anything questionable coming from GFL? The idea of this magazine sounds cool - but I'm concerned that they could lead me to being glutened! :blink:

I get Living Without. Gluten-Free Living is also pretty popular. Oh, and GIG (Gluten Intolerance Group) comes out with a quarterly newsletter, as well...if you become a member you get the newsletter, some brochures and dining cards, and discounted prices if you go to any of the seminars they have.

      Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

      My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
