10 Month Old Son With Gluten Or Wheat Sensitivity?

Hello,

My 10 month old son has very swollen eyelids, I realized this after he had baby food that contained oat flour? I eliminated wheat/oat from his diet for 2 weeks and his eyes cleared up.

I gave him bread/wheat and oat and his eyes swelled again? I took him to the Dr. and she recommended we go wheat/gluten free for 6 months and then re-introduce to see if he has out grown this intolerance, rather then do a blood test because she said you have to eat wheat/gluten heavily for a month straight to have the best results and avoid a false positive? Anyone else dealing with is? Any advice, I don't mind going gluten/wheat free, I was worried to pump his little body with wheat/gluten for a whole month? Not sure what to do?

Also, he tolerates baby food that is made in the same facility as wheat? In order to be Gluten FREE does it have to be made in a different facility? If he can tolerate things made in the same facility, just not actual bread, or oats is it gluten? I am really confused, any help would be great, Thank YOU

The blood test (called a RAST) for allergens is notorious for being inaccurate. But that being said, if it is an ALLERGY you do not need to be pumping him full of anything for his blood to test positive. My Nephew tested positive for nuts and milk and he does have a serious nut allergy. I don't see how it would hurt to run a RAST test on him. It does sound like it could be an allergy. Now, for a Celiac test you DO need to be eating gluten for both the blood test and a biopsy.

Gluten free means wheat, barley, rye, and most oats in any form. Now most people who eat gluten free will consume things made in the same facility but not on the same equipment. Some people are extra sensitive and cautious and will not eat something made in the same facility. It is personal preference and something you need to decide for yourself. Personally I will feed my son things made in a facility that processes wheat, but not things made on the same lines or with the same equipment.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
