Chronic Diarrhea After Being Off Gluten For 6 Months

Hi, I'm hoping for some advice to help my 22-month old son. My son was diagnosed with Celiac over 6 months ago and he has made incredible progress since then. However, he has had chronically soft stool/diarrhea for the past 3 weeks, with no improvement despite trying the BRAT diet, eliminating dairy, etc. Stool tests came out negative for parasites, etc. The only thing I can think of is that he started daycare about 6 weeks ago and that maybe he is ingesting gluten somehow, despite the staff's assurances that they only give him gluten-free food or the special items that I provide (i.e. bread, pasta, cookies). I'm not sure if this can be the reason though, because he continued to have soft stool even when he took a 10-day absence from the daycare. Could the daycare food still be the culprit? He used to have this problem a lot before he was diagnosed, but this is the first time it has come back since then and lasted so long. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You could try a whole foods diet to see if that helps. That means no more processed gluten free grains. I am very sensitive and can't eat them. I buy my grains whole and sort and wash before eating. Or, is there something that you added/changed recently that you can try eliminating? I hope he gets better soon.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
