how long does it take being gluten free that someone starts to shed extra weight? my crazy weight gain seems to have slowed down, but i still seem to be retaining a lot of fluid throughout my body. i've only been gluten-free for about 10 days, am i being overly optimistic? need some encouragement--this is hard. thanks.

Welcome!

Are you celiac or gluten intolerant?

Ten days is not very long.

The weight loss will be different for everyone.

Make sure you are not eating a lot of gluten free replacement foods as they can have more calories. Eat meats, veggies and fruits.

You might want to cut down on salt for a while and see if that helps too.

Thank you!

i am self-diagnosed after multiple doctors refused to address my concerns. i finally put it together in my head that i've probably had issues with gluten for a long time, whether celiac or intolerance. i started eliminating it from my diet out of desperation before i could afford to have the bloodwork done. i figured, if i felt better, i dont need a set of labs to diagnose me.

i actually, for the first time in a long, long time, can say i am feeling a little better. the first couple days were rough, but i have a lot of other stressors right now, and hypothyroidism (hashimoto's) so it's hard (without the darn labs) to know what to attribute to what. but i feel less bloated, i seem to be accumulating less fluid, a huge fog is lifting a bit and i intuitively feel like this is the right thing to be doing.

can a severe eating disorder trigger problems with gluten? if it is an "intolerance" rather than celiac, will i eventually be able to reincorporate small amounts of gluten into my diet? does it take awhile for bowel movements to regulate again? i hope if i am patient the extra weight will eventually come off. i have so many questions about this process. thank you.

It can take longer than 6 months for antibodies to drop to the normal range,  My DGP IgA took a few years as I got stricter and stricter about being gluten free  But having symptoms again could also mean you’re getting some gluten in your diet.

Hi, I just had my 6 month check after being diagnosed Celiac 6 months ago.  All of my panel numbers were normal except: Deamidated Gliadin Abs, IgA (It is 31 with high being over 30)  I have also been having symptoms again. Am I not actually being as careful as I think I am or does it take longer than 6 months for this particular test to come back down?  I can't get ahold of my doctor this week as she is out.     Thank you!

That is very strange, because it looks to me like two very different test results, but for the same test! It's definitely time to contact your doctor for clarity on this.

Scott, thank you SO MUCH for this!! She has been through so much in the last three years as we've tried to track down answers. This language will definitely help me help her to reframe.
