For those of you who fly United, today is the first time EVER that I was able to see "Gluten Free" as an option for elite members. I clicked that box with a smile :D

I used one of my Systemwide upgrades for a trip one week from today. I'll update you about the food when I return.

So glad as this was never an option before.

I'm flying united PS JFK-SFO in a few weeks, coach out to SFO but business on the way back. Do you think they'll have gluten-free meals in business if I order in advance?

Have you flown on the PS service ever before? If not, you're in for a real treat! It's awesome. You've never been on a 757 like this before.

Based upon your status with United (Premier, Premier Executive or 1K) call the 800 # for reservations and tell them that you need a gluten-free meal. They will take care of you.

I literally just flew back from Puerto Rico last night and had gluten-free meals both ways.

Just flew round trip from Los Angeles to London this past week. Per my request, gluten free meals were served on both legs and I was quite impressed. I even had a special goat cheese omelet just before landing in London.

One of the flight attendants even chatted with me about Celiac disease for a good portion of the flight.

A+ to United Airlines.

Glad to hear that more airlines are serving gluten free meals. But be aware that just because they serve gluten free meals that they will serve you a gluten free meal. Let me explain. I flew on Continental, which servies gluten free meals, from Louisville, Ky. to Dallas to Seattle and they would not provide a gluten free meal for me. They said they do provide gluten free meals but only on international flights. It must have been buried in the fine print somewhere. I raised hell and they told me to bring my own food on board. Now that's taking care of their passengers!

Check to make sure you don't come up against the same stupid find print when you fly within the US.

You will only get a Gluten Free requested meal if you are confirmed in business or first class 48 hours prior to an INTERNATIONAL departure.

But even if you are in Economy or Economy Plus on an International flight, you will have the option to pre-pay one of their new "Premium Meal Options". They are always changing and can be a bit pricey ($18-$19), but there is almost always a gluten-free option.

It's too bad that they don't do that on domestic flights, but that's why I have plenty of zip lock baggies to pre-pack a meal.

PS - An unopened pack of all natural turkey breast is my best friend on a long domestic flight. ;)

My PS flight was cancelled last week due to the storms and I had to fly back in coach! No gluten-free meal for me.

Oh no! Try and book the PS again in the future. It's really worth the trip.

I flew United last fall to Europe for work and had no trouble getting a gluten free meal in Economy. Don't know if that's because I went through the travel agency my company uses, but I didn't have a problem nor did I have an extra charge. I've also flown Lufthansa and Scandinavian airways and both were very accommodating.

Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.

I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?

Would it be rude to ask your age?

Wow! Thank you @trents I  really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.
