Nebraska Panhandle Celiacs

Hey, I am moving to the Nebraska Panhandle (Scottsbluff are) at the beginning of August and am very interested in a local support group. To the best of my knowledge the closest would be Grand Island, almost a three hour drive. I am willing to put in the time and work to get a group started up if necessary. If there are any other celiacs/gluten-free in the area who would be interested let me know. I plan on persuing this from many avenues, but decided to start here. Thanks

Welcome to Nebraska!! :D I live in the opposite direction, so I wouldn't be of any help to you, but just wanted to say Welcome to the State!! I live in the SE corner... small town. Hope you find some celiac disease friends around you... good luck with your move!!

Kimberly, Thanks for the welcome. I hope I will be able to find at least a few gluten-free friends. I have been trying my best to spread awareness in the community I am in now, and will do the same after my move. If there aren't any diagnosed, there are bound to be some yet to be discovered. If I am ever in your corner of the state, I will let ya know.

I know of two celiac people here in my small town, but we don't "discuss" it. I don't know where they are in their process, but it seems like a "taboo" subject. I would love to have someone who actually wants to discuss it and get together and bake, etc. Maybe some day!! Right now I have this board ~ which is my lifeline!!!

Good luck with your move... :)

Hi Megan! I hope you like Nebraska!! At least on your side you're close to Colorado.

Kimberly, unbelievable. I sent you a pm. I'm also in Auburn! How bizarre is that?! I'm having a really rough time with celiac disease and ra right now. It's nice to know there's someone close by who can relate!

I'm from Auburn too although I currently live in Papillion. I sent you both a PM to introduce myself.

@Healthforme, No prescription needed for thiamine hydrochloride, Benfotiamine, and TTFD (Tetrahydrofurfuryl Disulfide).  They are available over the counter.   Thiamine Mononitrate is not recommended because the body doesn't absorb or utilize it well.

HLA-DQ2 is NOT a continuum 2.01 to 2.99, but I don’t understand HLA genetics well enough to explain it further.  It is not just one gene that is either this or that.

Okay, I'm taking a guess here. We are used to hearing in layman terms that having either the HLA-DQ2 or the HLA-DQ8 gene, either heterozygous or homozygous, presents the possibility of developing active celiac disease. So, I'm guessing that the HLA-DQ2 gene is actually a range of variants (2.01-2.99) with HLA-DQ 2.5 being in the centerpiece of the range. I'm also guessing that "permissive" is equivalent to "possessing the possibility" to develop active celiac disease and does not address the issue of hetero vs. homozygus per se. But the fact that 2.01,2.01 is a couplet may indicated homozygousity? All wild guesses.

I received the results that my child has the genes for celiac disease (she is still undergoing testing and it has been complicated). Can someone explain if this is homozygous HLA DQ 2.5 or not? The interpretation just says permissive for celiac disease. Thank you! DQ Alpha 1  05:01, 5 DQ Beta 1 02:01, 02:01 DQ serologic equivalent 2,2
