Scared Out Of My Mind

Alright so basically first post, hopefully in the right section, wasn't to sure, BUT anyways A short idea of my issue is facing the unknown, I got positive bloodwork for celiac they said it was at 18 or something, which I find high considering I hate bread lol and am due for a gastroanterologist on march 1st (on P.E.I it takes bloody forever, as I got diagnosed like a month before xmas) but basically all my life I was fine, never would have known about celiac, but come my 20th birthday, the head rash/acne thing(which now sounds like Hepatitus dermaformus) I had on my scalp went balistic and spread to my face, which ended in nodular acne, and that devested me, the pain was nothing compared to how it made me feel, so on I went with acutane, which I now know thanks to those lawyer commericals can cause all sorts of intestinal issues -.- (yes bare with me I have a point to all this) This all culminated into depression, anexity, and all the lovely bits that go with that, thing was, long after acutane, the depression and anexity stuck, so stupid little me, thinking depression was the worst thing ever (haha) goes hey, y'know I'm tired of surviving each day, I want to live each day, and on I went to Celexa, The Drug From Hell. I knew SSRI's were dangerous, but I figured only because it could mess with your mind, never would have seen what it was going to do comming, 3 weeks into it I had a rather spicy BM, didn't think to much of it, then the next day, took the pill, and my god, I have never been in so much pain in my entire life, it was horrific, and I believe the drug made my anexity trip out, so there I was bearing unbearable pain (not fun) thinking omg, soon this will be over, I have a new appreciation for the little lame problems I had, real pain > mental pain. Thing is, my stomach never really got back to normal, almost every damn BM causes me some kind of distres or pain or SOMEthing, even when it looks normal, and the weirdest part, is I'm somehow staying regular, everyday, even though it ain't much, I am not consuming hardly any fiber, so I really wonder, when I have a BM it usually feels like a mix of constipation and the big bad D as far as burning and stomach pain(a while after I go my lower stomach hurts like in between my pelvic bones), now it isn't THAT bad, but still, hardly comfortable, and I've been (as far as I know) gluten free since xmas, and for at least like two maybe three weeks soy free as well, I'm starting to worry fruit is doing it.. (the small amounts that I do have, not to contradict myself) which is why I find that hard to believe I don't eat that much but.. I had a bowl of blueberries, next day, stomach hurt all day, likely it was something else I had but still, maybe it was contaminated or I have some fructose intolerance?

So in conclusion if you made it through all of that, I applaude you, and prey that SOMEone went through this, or can at least give me an idea of what the heck is wrong with me.

Is this part of the increasing long healing process?

Will I ever get better?

or do I need to see a shrink I.E (hypervigilance of the instestinal tract) or just all in my head.

so tired of being scared to take a number two -.-

again sorry for the length.

I am so sorry you are going through all this. Please be aware that if you are not eating gluten your celiac tests with the GI doctor will be negative. That said if you are still having issues even after being gluten free until then it is a good idea to see one. If you want him to formally diagnose you celiac you do need to go back on gluten right away though.

It is not uncommon for celiacs to have issues with anxiety and/or depression. The antibodies can effect the brain. Some newer research is advising doctors to test for celiac in patients that don't respond to antidepressants. I suffered from depression off and on for most of my life but thankfully that resolved after I had been gluten free for a bit. No antidepressant ever helped me,in fact most made me worse. I do have anxiety issues that did not resolve though. Finally I got a doctor to listen and stop giving me antidepressants or combo antidepressant and antianxiety meds and give me a straight antianxiety and the difference has been incredible. I also go to therapy and now am on just a minimal dose.

If your GI track is still giving you problems it might be a good idea to cook your fruits and veggies before you eat them as it will make them easier to digest. Do go with as much whole food as you can and stay away from alcohol until you are well healed as that is tough on the system also.

I do hope your feeling better soon.

First off I am so sorry this is happening to you. I have been there and back, so I know how hard it is. Before the celiac diagnosis I was having severe anxiety, they put me on lexapro and let me tell you the worst 4 days of my life. I got this symptom most people refer to as "brain zaps" where you feel like you are seriously being struck by lighting in the head. Anyway, being sick and having no answers besides Doctors throwing meds and me for 2 years I would say my anxiety reached an all time high. I finally found a doc who ran not just test for Celiac but also other food intolerances. Turns out I have many more than just gluten, so that is why I did not heal after eliminating gluten. So I followed the diet and felt great for about 6 months until I all the sudden started having bathroom issues. I went from major diarehea to severe fecal impactions. Well I went back to the doc and she tested my stool and we found out I had a yeast infection that was off the charts high. She said she had never seen someone with levels that high. I explained my symptoms and told her about my severe anxiety. She told me that the yeast release an endotoxin that goes straight to your brain and causes your symptoms. So turns out I am not totally crazy! lol..well I am 3 weeks into the treatment to get rid of this yeast infection and I am fine some days and other days I am so anxious I just want to crawl in a hole. My doctor recommended I try Ashwagandha twice a day and that should help. I am more willing to try something like that over these SSRI's. I had bad post partum depression after my son was born 6 years ago and I went on Effexor XR. It did work, but after a year I decided to come off of it. I titrated down under doctor supervision and it was still the worst month of my life. The withdrawl was awful. If you do need an anti-anxiety med that is totally fine, but I would really try a natural remedy first and see if that helps. The worst thing that can happen is that it doesnt help, then you move on to the next thing. I am picking up some natural herbs today to help curve the anxiety, and I will let you know how they work. Also, you may want to consider doing an all natural cleanse that can get rid of excess yeast in your system. I know its worked wonders for me already. Good luck and please know there are people out there who are experiencing the same things as you and we are all here you for! :)

oh dayum, I didn't know how I was going to make it a few more weeks, you put up with these things so long =O, It's funny I was just reading about that yeast thing and SIBO and I was thinking well, worrying that it's some kind of damage from the celexa, like it tore up my intstinal tract some how, y'know like burn off some lining or something =o, because as it stands, It seems like I'm gluten sensitive, soy sensitive, diary sensitive AND fructose, seems a bit excessive right?

stupid question this yeast infection, all I know of yeast infections is women get them..down thur =p

men can get this yeast infection of the stomach right? dumb questions must be asked lol

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
