Hi,

I just got my first official biopsy results and they were completely normal. I started on a gluten free diet about three months prior to the test. Would that be enough time to reverse the damage?

I was tested through Enterolabs back in February and the results were positive, that's when I started on the gluten-free diet.

I have to admit, I should be happy with the normal results of the biopsy, however I wish I had a concrete diagnosis, so I am oddly disappointed. I'm feeling like a hypochondriac and that maybe I'm being a gluten Nazi for no reason. I do feel better on the diet, although it hasn't resolved everything.

I have hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune thyroid disease). Is it possible that the immune system just attacked my thyroid as a result of the gluten and not my small intestine?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, 3 months would be enough time to reverse the damage and give a false negative result on the biopsy. I think that if enterolab said that you have problems with gluten and if you feel better on the gluten-free diet, then your body definatley has issues with gluten. It is probably worth staying on the diet. You can get a gene test to see if you have the gene for celiac, this may be more concrete.

Yes, you need to be on gluten heavily(equal to 3 pieces of bread a day) for 3 months prior to testing. If you are gluten free that will heal damage. So those results are NOT accurate at all.

Even if you were on gluten and the biopsy came back negative-it would not rule celiac out because you could have sporadic damage that they miss or no damage yet.

Did you ever have blood tests done while you were on gluten? If so, did you have the complete panel? Or which tests?

Thyroid disorders are highly connected with celiac too. I have Graves disease(hyperthyroid)

I would go with the Enterolab results. That is a good test to have done and it came back positive for a reason.

And if you feel better on the diet then go with that. Your body knows what is bad for it so listen to it but don't expect all your symptoms to go away overnight. It took me 8 months to get back to normal but I saw improvement after 3 months gluten free. Have you also made sure lipsticks/cosmetics/shampoos/soaps and all that stuff is gluten free?

Thanks Carrie and Kaiti. I wasn't sure if 3 months would be enough to heal damage. And, as you say, it might just have missed the damaged areas. I had accidental gluten slips ups in those 3 months, but certainly nothing like 3 pieces of bread a day!

And, no, I haven't checked all my makeup/etc. yet. I was just about to look into that. I think I've finally got the diet down and am feeling reasonably comfortable with it. Now I need to track down any remaining sources.

      I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

      It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

      Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.

      PS - I think you meant this site, but I don't believe it has been updated in years: http://glutenfreedrugs.com/ so it is best to use: You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
