Most Doctors Refuse To Believe In Celiac Or Hypoglycemia

Most doctors that I have seen in the past do not believe that the conditions of Celiac Disease and Hypoglycemia exist. I have seen allot of Veterans Addministration Hospital Doctors over the last few years. They simply do not believe that these conditions are real. So, over these past few years it was up to me to descover what foods, I can or cannot tolerate. I constantly sufer from low blood sugar levels or high blood sugar levels and everything in between. I found out that I was allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, sunflower seeds and etc.... I cannot tolerate soy products as well. Products containing food additives and food processing chemicals also makes me sick to my stomach. I cannot eat any foods containing sugar or by products of sugar. Sugar substitutes do not set right with my body either. Only natural sugars found in some Natural Fruits can I tolerate. I found out through guidence from my current doctor that, I must eat pretty much a bland diet to survice on the rest of my life because, I have eat all the wrong foods all my life. Now, I am very much regretting all my decision to eat the wrong foods. The sooner you discover the foods you can and cannot eat the better off you will be further down the road in life. I just wished that I would have paid more attention to my diet in the past.

Don't we all! I've sure thought that after my diabetes DX! But we can't beat ourselves up. As you've said there's some responsibility lacking on the part of the medical community and also some factors that we may not have been able to control. Have to set those things aside and move forward. We now know so can do something about it and don't have to be a victim. We can be victors!

I strongly recommend a low-carbohydrate diet to regulate your blood sugar. It works very well for me. I too can be both high and low. Nice stable BGs now. I have MANY food allergies and many foods off the menu due to blood sugar but was still able to work out a manageable low-carb diet.

I'm sorry that the docs haven't been helpful. I've run into that myself with the blood sugar. If you still feel like you need a DX or that it would be helpful, I encourage you to advocate for yourself and pursue getting a 5 hr. OGTT, even if you need to find a new doc. I recently got in to see a specialist but took me over a year to do it. I wanted to be re-evaluated for type 1 diabetes and all the endo's said "no new diabetes patients!" So finally my allergist put in a personal call to beg one to accept me! Turns out I've been walking around with type 1 all this time! for years! Can you get a meter to test? That would help you make food choices as well.

All the best to you!

What? Why would an endo doc have any say on that? Plus like ignoring it would mean you didn't have it?

Knock on wood, I have been very greatful for the docs I have seen. I go to the Third Medical Group on Elmendorf Airforce base. Now it wasn't the fastest, I had to wait to 6 or 7 weeks to get my endoscopy, but both my reg. doc and my GI doc were great, especially my regular family practice guy. I wish that was everyone's experience.

Oh, did you mean they wouldn't see any new patients? I misunderstood.

The endo was not accepting any new patients with a diabetes Dx. I was DX with T2 by my primary care. If I had a different DX, ie: thyroid then they would accept me. Sounds like discrimination but is common. Maybe diabetes patients are high maintanance :( I was told that they limit but that once I got in I would get good care. My family doc has been a good ally but has his limits and I really needed a specialist but kept being turned away from endo. Primary care doc. could not do the tests needed and was not familiar with the things I needed. My case of diabetes is unusual for the general population but probably more common amoung us here and often misdx. I suspect.

She used to take supplements, but her abdominal pain is so debilitating that she hasn't been able to continue.  Her primary care team has been suggesting liquid supplements rather than pill form to help.  They just drew a lot of blood Friday and we are slowly getting all that work back.  I will definitely check into thiamine!  Thanks!

They have not done that yet.   We are looking at some other treatments to help. And you are correct.  The tickborne illness has been a wild ride.  Our whole family has been battling different tickborne illnesses.  Its expensive and exhausting.

I cannot tolerate it at all - triggers burning and nausea, ditto aspirin.  Here in the UK I take Paracetamol.

For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea. @stephaniekl, welcome to the forum, Is your daughter taking any nutritional supplements?   Weight loss and failure to thrive are two symptoms of thiamine insufficiency.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms are not recognized as such by doctors.   I experienced similar symptoms when I became malnourished.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms can become worse quickly, and can affect one emotionally and mentally.  Although blood tests for thiamine aren't accurate, do have your daughter checked for nutritional deficiencies.  Thiamine B 1 works with the other B vitamins and magnesium.  Thiamine and Niacin B 3 help improve Gerd.  All the B vitamins are frequently low due to malabsorption.  Vitamin D will help calm the immune system.  Thiamine helps the immune system fight off viruses like those tick borne illnesses.   Thiamine Mononitrate, which is in many vitamin supplements, is not bioavailable.  I was taking a multivitamin containing thiamine mononitrate and still became deficient in thiamine. Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.  A form called TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) is also excellent for correcting thiamine deficiency.  A combination of Thiamine, Cobalamine B12, and Pyridoxine B 6 has analgesic properties.  I take it for back pain.   Keep us posted on your progress!
