Greetings from Southeast Wisconsin!

I am newly diagnosed (going on 2 weeks) & searching for some support close to home.

I'm located 40 minutes north of Milwaukee in small town, USA.

It would be nice to have a shopping partner - someone to hang out with - just someone who really gets that this disease involves more than intestinal issues.

Hello, Pondy. I just responded to MelindaLee's post as well. I'm south of MKE, so a little far away for a shopping buddy (although I really want to check out that Costco in Grafton!) but just thought I'd say hi. I have some family in West Bend, too.

I noticed on the facebook page that a cookbook author with a new gluten free cake book out is having an event at a bookstore on Downer in MKE on Friday the 25th of March. I figured I would try to make my way there, just for a taste of cake, if nothing else. Anyone want to meet up, let me know!

(We can practice our secret handshake ;))

Secret handshake - that's cute :) Yeah, we'll have to work one out.

I haven't been to Costco - think you have to be a member. However, the new Woodman's in the Falls has a huge selection of gluten-free products - including some Desert Essence soaps & lotions. The prices are fair also. It's worth checking out.

And, yeah, I'm just going for the cake. I'm really not into box mixes because they are just too much money, but I'll happily taste test for them :D.

Oh, and I am very fortunate to have a "Woody's" within two miles of my house. DH and I walk to it at least three times a week in good weather (just started our walking season last night by picking up some groceries there... and my muscles are feeling it today :blink:.) I love the rice crackers in the Asian aisle. That's where I get all of my rice and tapioca flour, too!

Just came back in to brag... er, I mean... say that:

I HAD CAKE!

I went to the bookstore event, and they had samples of her cakes... and I must admit, they were delicious.

Even she had an issue w/ the cost of gluten-free cake mixes, and had recommendations on maximizing them once you forked out the money for one.

I just requested her book from my library (ever the cheapskate, I) and am going to give some of her recipes a shot. And, if the book disappoints? Well, who cares?

:lol: Your post made me laugh! That is how I felt when we went to the cupcake factory and I had a cupcake! WHoo-hooo! So I just discovered this part of the forum. We three on this thread are in a big triangle! I am about 2/3 the way to Madison and also live outside "small town USA" We could all meet in Waukesha and practice that handshake! :P Terri O

Can't believe I missed it!!! Yeah, I'm jealous. I really am. My sweet tooth is crazy strong!

I do have to say though, last weekend I made frosted brownies - Pamela's brand mixes - and they were outta this world!

      Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have.It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

      @Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

      Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

      Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!
