Sweet Smelling Urine

Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease and went gluten-free, in May of 2010, I used to have sweet smelling urine, not all the time, but most often at night and in the early a.m. At that time, before the celiac disease diagnosis, I got all the glucose blood tests at my doctor's, and it was generally normal (90s). After going gluten-free, my urine 99.7% of the time stopped smelling sweet. My glucose levels have been normal since then too - 90s.

In the last two days, I've had late night/early morning incidences (3) of sweet-smelling urine and became a bit concerned. I've done a lot of Internet searching, and the Web consensus seems to be: diabetes, yeast infection, cystisis, possibly bad diet. Of course, I don't want to think about diabetes. And considering I used to have SS urine all the time and never succumbed (and had blood tests) I really don't think it is diabetes. My diet is generally very good.

There's just one question, but it's only barely likely this is it. About three days ago, I bought King Arthur pancake mix, something I haven't had. I am 95% sure the box said it was gluten free but darnit, I threw the box away right after emptying its contents into a plastic container. I google-imaged King Arthur pancake mix for the boxes, and it seems like they make gluten-free mix and multigrain mix, and the two come in completely different package types. But let me just check: does anyone know if they have a 'regular' pancake mix that comes in a box similar to their gluten-free mix that I may have accidentally purchased?

And even so, I'm not having any other symptoms, and I'm not even sure getting gluten would cause SS urine.

I am also interested in hearing people's experiences with yeast and/or UTIs in relation to sweet smelling urine.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks.

hey- i dont have any advice on King Arthur's products...

& ive never had SS urine

but i have had UTIs & Yeast Infections-> and they were much more common when i was consuming gluten. havent had anything since going gluten-free. also-> Interstitial Cystitis is common in people with Autoimmune Disease in their family- and i swear towards the end of my gluten days (and high fructose fruit days)- i was experiencing this.

also ive read that D-Mannose not only helps with UTIs (in binding the sugar that the UTI bacteria eat)-> but it also allegedly binds up gluten. so there MUST be a connection between gluten & bladder health.

hope someone has better advice for u :)

Thanks for your comment, Cass.

I called King Arthur and think I got all straightened out. Don't think it was gluten pancake mix I bought - I think I got the right one. They say all their boxes that are blue and white are gluten-free.

There must be a connection between gluten and bladder. If/when I finally make it to my celiac disease expert appointment, that is on the list of questions to ask him.

I have never heard of D Mannose, I'm looking into it now.

Thanks again.

This might be too much information, so forgive me. (And probably just a little gross.)

What I've concluded is that an unflushed (urine) toilet is not the best way to judge urine smell. The more and older urine there is, the less accurate, IMO, are our noses. Therefore, probably the thing to do is to pee into a cup and then smell it. When I did that, there was no sweet smell. I did that during the day, so to be really accurate, I need to do it at 4 a.m. when I frequently had been smelling the sweetness before. That will be a definite challenge though.

Sorry for the detail, but perhaps someone else might find it informative.

This is really good advice, and not something I would have thought of. Thanks for being willing to post your experience and conclusions.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
