Anyone With Microscopic Colitis That Can Answer A Question For Me?

Hi All,

This is probably a really dumb question, but does anyone know how they test for microscopic colitis? Is it endoscopy or colonoscopy or blood tests or... I'm clueless, but apparently it is closely linked with celiac disease and my doctor said he was going to test for it the day he does my endoscopy for celiac biopsies. He also said he was going to do 8 biopsies ... so that sounds like a LOT, and I don't know if that is because of testing for eosinophilc esophagitis (which he also mentioned testing for) or microscopic colitis, or what. He ordered lab tests for the same day, but I think those are thyroid related. I'm just a little stumped. Not sure if the nurse gave me only partial instructions for the day before. Thanks in advance for taking the time to fill me in, if you happen to know the answer to this! Much appreciated! B)

They diagnose microscopic colitis via biopsies taken during a colonoscopy. It is not visible when they look around, but is under a microscope. My daughter (17) has it and so do I. We are both celiac too.

Ugh... I was afraid of that. I was/am a bit confused because he said he was going to check for microscopic colitis, as well, but just gave me info on the endoscopy, so I don't know if he's planning that for the same day or not, or what he's doing. Guess I'd better call. Thanks for the info, and is Micro-Colitis managed with medication or diet or? I really know nothing about it other than, its very often tied to celiac. Thanks so much for your response!

Welcome, @Melvin McDowell! Just wanted you to know you are replying to a post that was made 21 years ago. It is unlikely that person is still monitoring this thread, especially since they are a "guest" poster and not registered as a member.

My feeling is that histamine intolerance/MCAS is doesn't get enough press in the medical world and is greatly underdiagnosed.

I just saw in Trent’s response something about the vitamins. Good to know.

Have you heard anything about being celiac and pills, vitamins not absorbing into your system?  I hope that makes sense. Basically, you don’t get the full effect. There is something that helps the absorption, like Vit C?? Thanks for all of your help.

Updating to note that it has been over a month since I initially wrote Prana and they haven't provided a response to my question about what testing limits (ppm) they use now. I've sent them a couple reminder emails but nothing. Booo.
