Different Reactions To Different Glutenings?

My main symptoms of celiac have been muscle pain/neuropathy, gerd, and constipation. I have been gluten-free since the middle of January. It was going great until a few weeks ago when I had serious glutening issues. My reaction was a return of the muscle pain and neuropathy. That had pretty much cleared up after a week and a half when I went to eat a "gluten-free" meal at my parent's retirement place restaurant on Easter. I have had D since. I am guessing CC as the cause. It is getting better finally, I think. But D has never been an issue for me, before gluten-free or since. Is this unusual to have a different reaction? par for the course? Please share your experience. Thanks.

My reactions differ depending on how much gluten I ingest, whether it is a small amount over a few days, or one bigger one time dose. My reactions also differ depending on how long it is since I last had a reaction, or, how healed I am. My reactions seem worse around the time of my period, or with strenuous exercise, or if I'm under a lot of stress. There seem to be a lot of factors which contribute to differences in a gluten reaction.

Yeah, I agree with glutenings being different - just dunno the reason why. Often I will feel light headed & just plain wrong within 20 minutes or so - and extremely tired. Usually I get wicked headaches, sinus pain, and then the stomach cramps & nausea start...and the D.

However, sometimes from a lighter CC reaction I will just feel really (& I mean really) crabby ! Oh - and I get a lot of reflux. For instance, a couple of weeks ago I missed some wheat in a salad dressing and had a small amount on my salad @ supper for 3 nights in a row. It took me that long to figure it out - I felt horrible, miserable, and had the worst reflux than I've had in years - ate a lot of antacids & they didn't seem to work - and then it hit me ! I started reading & looking at what I was eating. Interestingly, no headaches and only mild D & cramping that I didn't pay attention to (thought maybe it was from milk somewhere).

Went to the Spaghetti Factory in Nashville & had gluten free pasta and spent the whole night waking with stomach cramps & nausea and had lots of D in the morning. Got up, showered, went back & lay down for awhile again - that was truly horrible !

Dunno why it varies so much - you'd think all reactions would be the same. I joke I could hire myself out as a gluten detector because I can usually tell within half an hour if I've been zinged.

Oh - and gotta add that when I visit relatives & bring my own food and try really hard to be careful - I usually feel awful in a few days. I chalk it up to continued exposure to small amount of CC in pots, pans, cutting boards, etc. It's that milder reaction again - but can still mean bloating & joint pain/tiredness.

I usually start to feel off and at some point from the trigger to the next morning get light nausea if it was mild all the way to a full-blown ick fest, usually at night. Those are freaky. Just had one last night.

      Losing 12" of your small bowel is going to present challenges for you in nutritional uptake because you are losing a significant amount of nutritional absorption surface area. You will need to focus on consuming foods that are nutritionally dense and also probably look at some good supplements. If indeed you are having issues with gluten you will need to educate yourself as to how gluten is hidden in the food supply. There's more to it than just avoiding the major sources of gluten like bread and pasta. It is hidden in so many things you would never expect to find it in like canned tomato soup and soy sauce just to name a few. It can be in pills and medications.  Also, your "yellow diarrhea, constipation and bloating" though these are classic signs of a gluten disorder, could also be related to the post surgical shorter length of your small bowel causing incomplete processing/digestion of food.

      There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until awakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher.       I have always eaten gluten and never stopped until my recent episode. I started more wheat products as my Dr. requested for the Tissue Transglutaminase Iga Antibody. mye result Value <1.0 Value interpretation: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or =15.0 Antibody detected I do not understand any of it. After eating all that wheat product my body exploded with all sorts of symptoms. I stop gluten ASAP. I am still in the healing process. I started having issues after my surgery.
