Gastroparesis And Maybe Celiac?

Greg85

I have gastroparesis, my stomach literally stopped working. On protonix, had 5 scopes, 1 colon, 1 pill cam, and one time 6 ulcers with no h-pylori. Had my gallbladder out last year, and have chronic gastritis, and no reason for any of this.

I can only tolerate now potatoes, only. Lost 75 pounds this year, and still on the down swing.

I like to start eatting spinich at least again, but scared because it feels like my stomach is a raw sack, with nerve burning to my left elbow and left knee.

Could there been celiacs maybe here? I had blood test but negative, but I could touch pasta, or cereals, even baby cereal I could not touch or even white rice. Rice crackers I could not even do!!! I'm lost i'll will add in more info when people start posting. I am lost and only on potatoes because pain is so bad, feels like no stomach lining with severe cold chills, back pain that daggers, and constipation beyond bad.

Thanks,

Greg

Spinach would not likely be a very good choice to add in first off if you are only able to tolerate potatos at this point. Add in some other well cooked easy to digest veggie or fruit instead like applesauce, peas or sweet potatoes. Adding some baked plain chicken might also be a good idea as you need some protein.

As far as celiac goes if you are already gluten free, which you are if all you eat is potatos, then testing would not be possible as you need to be eating gluten for testing.

Some of us do have gastroparesis and some have had gallbladders out. Whether there is a connection for you between celiac and your other issues I can't say.

Greg, our stories are almost identical except for I could tolerate potatoes and jello. I have been diagnosed with gp since 2001 followed by a celiac positive, then celiac negative...I am now attempting to be gluten free. I also believe that I have developed a wheat allergy. I would not suggest you eat spinich, look up a low residue diet and follow and try to exclude gluten. If you stomach feels that raw you should talk to your doc about putting you on liquid carafate, it really helps and it will allow you to eat more foods. One of my mainstays was chicken broth with carrots, celery and potatoes ,it was perfect.

Did they do biopsies with all those scopes? I was told I have gastroparesis and given reglan for a few years. I ended up figuring out celiac on my own and being gluten free has done wonders for my symptoms... Then I saw an allergist recently and he said it was more likely eosinophilic esophagitis and my triggers are pretty normal (wheat, dairy, eggs).... But all this time they assumed a nondiabetic young adult would have gastroparesis, and it's not that at all!

Are you gluten-free now?

I suggest working up to more root veggies (different potato strains, carrots, beets, rutabaga) before hitting the super fibrous stuff like leafy greens, or just a little spinach at a time. That fiber may be a drastic change if you're just eating potatoes? (you know yourself best though!)

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.

TTG IgA reference range 0.0 to 14.9 KU/L

What was the reference range for that test? Each lab uses different reference ranges so a raw score like that makes it difficult to comment on. But it looks like a rather large number.
