Gluten-Free And My Eczema Is Back?

I've only been gluten free for two weeks now. Well, technically a week if I include my accidental glutening at a restaurant last week. But I've noticed my eczema is back on my fingers and it's SO annoying and painful! I haven't had an eczema outbreak in a reallllly long time and I'm kind of surprised it's back since going gluten-free.

Anyone have any ideas and/or similar reactions to going gluten-free? Is my body just going through a detox and this is part of the process?

If you were glutened last week that may explain why it is back. It takes a while to heal and you haven't been gluten free for very long. It seems to take the antibodies a while to leave the skin and any glutening you get for a while may bring it back. I hope it resolves soon for you and make sure you check your topicals for gluten ingredients as that can be an issue.

When I first went gluten free, my symptoms seemed to get worse before they got better...maybe it was a type of detox process. But I think my skin problems aren't just about gluten - I seem to react to almost all carbs. For the last couple weeks, I've been trying to stay away from even gluten-free breads, baked goods, etc, and my skin has cleared up again. I think when you first remove gluten from your diet, your body goes into overdrive trying to repair itself. I would say to be really careful for a couple weeks, try not to eat too many gluten-free processed alternatives (stick to whole, basic foods) and see how your skin reacts. After you get everything to calm down a bit, you can start introducing foods back and watch for a reaction. Hope you feel better soon!

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it.
