1 Week Update After Going Gluten Free

Hey guys,

SO I've been gluten free for one week now and I just want to describe what I am going through.

If I had to put it into percentages I'd say before going gluten free I was at about 45% health. After a week of going gluten free, I'd say I'm at around 70% health. This is a pretty good size leap in health that I am pretty happy about. I just hope that after another week I can be back closer to 90% or 95%.

Symptoms I started with:

- Constant Heartburn/Indigestion (especially in the morning)

- Constant Pounding Heart (All day every day)

- Racing Heart after meals (especially after gluted meals)

- Anxiety/Depression

- Adrenal Fatigue

- Eczema (all over my right foot and a little on my hand)

- Esophageal Spasms

- Blood in Snot

- Constantly Dehydrated

- Inability to exercise

- Throat tightness

- Allergies to stuff I was never allergic to before (marijuana)

- Eye Floaters

Symptoms after one week gluten week (I'm hoping withdrawal symptoms):

- Dizziness

- Inability to focus/concentrate

- Dark circles under my eyes (especially in the mornings)

- Lots of gas

- Minimal Heartburn/Indigestion

- Joint Pain (In the hips and knees)

- Fatigue

- Blood in snot

Symptoms that have improved:

- The eczema on my right foot and hand is about 90% gone.

- The heart pounding is 90% gone.

- The heartburn/indigestion is 80% gone.

- Racing heart after meals is 100% gone.

- Anxiety is 65% gone.

- Throat tightness is 50% gone.

- Esophageal Spasms are 35% gone.

I hope the improvements keep coming and that this dizziness is just a withdrawal symptom.

I'll keep everybody posted.

Wonderful! How is the label reading going for you? Did you decide on a raw/whole foods diet? I hope your dizziness is due to going off glutens. Are you supplementing? Did you have any bloodwork to indicate vit and min levels?

I've been gluten free since Saturday (so only a few days), and I have similar symptoms in regards to the gas and dizziness. My doctor thinks it is due to eating differently. I take omeprazole 40 mg for heartburn and that hasn't resolved. I have more abdominal discomfort in general these days and always feel hungry, yet bloated! Hopefully these symptoms resolve. The Celiac Disease diagnosis is very new for me, but I'm thinking I'll get used to the gluten-free diet soon enough!

Hope you are feeling better!

Hey thanks for the quick response,

Label reading is really not that big of a problem because I'm eating mostly whole fruits, vieggies, and lean meat. The only thing I do eat that is somewhat processed is Heinz ketchup. And I have been using alot of it. I looked it up and their website says it is gluten free so that cool. I'm only worried about the corn in the high fructose corn syrup.

I have a good, gluten free multivitamin and probiotic that I am starting today that I got from my holistc doctor.

I had a vitamin and mineral panel done in late may early june i think and everything came back normal. I did test positive for a high count of bad bacteria and a yeast infection (I'm a male) which I have read is common with Celiacs.

Ebetta,

Get off Prilosec (omeprazole) right now! PPIs are some of the most dangerous drugs on the market. I literally almost died from 5 days of Prilosec. My body couldn't metabolize the toxin and it built up in my system over 5 days to the point I was overdosing on it. It nearly killed me and this was nearly a year and a half ago. Its what started this whole mess im in today with gluten. My case is special but if you need more proof, go to this site and look at the literally thousands of negative reivews on omeprazole Open Original Shared Link .

Though I suspect that some of your symptoms are probably from Celiacs, I know some of them are from Prilosec as well.

Get off that poison!

I'm so glad you're feeling better! You should continue to gain good health if you stay strictly gluten free. I know at first one of your worst symptoms was anxiety and racing heart. That's scary. I'm glad that's resolving. :D

The dizziness is definitely a withdrawal symptom. I had the same when I went gluten-free: dizziness, lightheaded, vertigo/ataxia, etc. Thankfully it only lasted about 5-7 days.

Hello,

I know this post is a bit older, but since it has been a little over a month, I was wondering what your symptoms are like now? Put it in % like you did last time. This is interesting.

Thanks,

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
