I know this question has probably been asked on numerous occasions, but am always curious to hear others response, as I continue to have persistent upper abdominal pain frequently radiating into my back that the docs all seem to link to my celiac, although, they are now questioning my gallbladder as being a coexisting issue. But with all that being said, how long did it take for folks to get rid of their abdominal pain after going gluten free? Mine seems to be relentless for 2 plus months now, never with a break, of a constant gnawing pain in upper abdomen slightly on the right as well with cramping/aching in my mid back, with currently no other symptoms.

I guess looking for some help as usual

And as always, thanks in advance for all the advice, I think it helps alot more to hear from patients who experience it, rather than a doctors textbook.

Hi there, this is a really good question! I am dealing with this right now. Before you get any gallbladder surgery perhaps try and treat for congested liver. I have had this pain on and off for years but have it worse now as have kicked coffee out of my diet. Coffee was acting as my 'bitters' which in herbal/TCM terms help the flow of bile. Bea/Yolo on here suggested Dandelion, which I have tried and is awesome at getting things to flow. It is quite drying so I would suggest using it with a moistening herb - probably something like Licorice. Herbs take a while to work so start slowly and tweak to see if this makes a difference. What I do is take the dandelion root in tea form - powdered from a capsule is safest (must be the root) about 30 mins before eating. After eating I sit reclined in a chair and then after a while I start to feel the bile flowing and the pain under the right rib cage and to my right shoulder starts to dissappear! I guess it will take a while of treating to get things back to the way they should be. Celiacs probably have thickened bile because of the excess toxins and leaky gut allowing toxins and bile back to the liver in quantities that are higher than normal.

Hope you get some other suggestions too - there are some extremely knowledgeable people on here!

I would get that pain until I eliminated soy. Pepto Bismal would help with that for me.

If you haven't considered either dairy (casien) or soy as a possible issue you may want to eliminate them and see if it helps.

Cramping aching in the mid-back sounds like spleen. Have you seen an acupuncturist? They may be able to help!

I've been having the gb-like pain in my upper right quadrant for months. It was one of my strongest symptoms before being DXed. I got a tingling sensation in my right shoulder blade quite often too, after eating. My Dr. said the pain and tingling in my back was most likely caused by my gb irritating a nerve that runs through that area. My issures haven't resolved yet. I've been gluten-free for about 3.5 months.

I've heard a lot of people with Celiac have gallbladder issues. If you can tolerate it just wait it out and see if it resolves on the gluten-free diet?

There's also a gall bladder friendly diet you could try?

      @Scott Adams That's actually exactly what I ended up asking for— vodka tonic with Titos.  I saw on their website that Tito's is certified gluten-free (maybe many of the clear vodkas are, I don't know, I just happened to look up Tito's in advance). I should have actually specified the 'splash' though, because I think with the amount of tonic she put in there, it did still end up fairly sweet.  Anyway, I think I've almost got this drink order down!

      Be interesting to see the effects of dairy reintroduction with gluten. As well as milk protein sensitivity in and of itself the casein part particularly has been shown to mimic gluten in about 50% of celiacs. Keep us posted!

      She has been dairy free for six years, so she’d already been dairy free for two years at her last testing and was dairy free for the entire gluten challenge this year as well (that had positive results). However, now that we’re doing another biopsy in six weeks, we decided to do everything we can to try to “see” the effects, so we decided this past week to add back in dairy temporarily for breakfast (milk and cereal combo like you said).

      Hi Christiana, Many thanks for your response.  Interestingly, I too cannot eat wheat in France without feeling effects (much less than in the US, but won't indulge nonetheless).  I also understand children are screened for celiac in Italy prior to starting their education. Wise idea as it seems my grandson has the beginning symptoms (several celiacs in his dad's family), but parents continue to think he's just being difficult.  Argh.  There's a test I took that diagnosed gluten sensitivity in 2014 via Entero Labs, and am planning on having done again.  Truth be told, I'm hoping it's the bromine/additives/preservatives as I miss breads and pastas terribly when home here in the states!  Be well and here's to our guts healing ❤️

      Lol that’s so true! Hope you get clarity, it’s tough when there’s doubt. There’s so much known about celiac disease with all the scientific research that’s been done so far yet practically and clinically there’s also so much unknown, still. Out of curiosity what’s her dairy consumption like? Even compared to early years to now? Has that changed? Calcium is dependent in the mechanism of antigen presenting cells in the gut. High calcium foods with gluten grains can initiate inflammation greater.  This is why breakfast cereals and milk combo long term can be a ticking time bomb for genetically susceptible celiacs (not a scientific statement by any means but my current personal opinion based on reasoning at present). Milk and wheat are the top culprits for food sensitivity. Especially in childhood. There are also patient cases of antibodies normalising in celiac children who had milk protein intolerance/ delayed type allergy. Some asymptomatic. There were a couple of cases of suspected celiacs that turned out to have milk protein intolerance that normalised antibodies on a gluten containing diet. Then there were others that only normalised antibodies once gluten and milk was eliminated. Milk kept the antibodies positive. Celiac disease is complicated to say the least.
