Dr. Michael Eng. He is near Union Square. He is my doctor and very nice. He really listens to the problems you're going through, and it's not difficult to get an appointment with him (I've heard of people who have had to wait several months with other doctors - yikes!).

He is my doctor and I have a great experience with him. He is supportive and knowledgeable. I've heard stories about people being diagnosed and left on their own. Dr. Bamji sets you up for success and follows up. He is also easy to get reach by phone and email.

I went to see Eng yesterday and while he seems knowledgable - I felt rushed and if I wanted any info about treating my condition, I had to drag it out of him. He wasn't exactly volunteering to offer ways to cope with Celliac. I had the sense of being in a "mill" - get 'em in and get 'em out. He's no longer on 5th Ave. He's at 115 E. 23rd Street. But you can get an appt quickly if you need one.

Peter Green is supposedly the best in NYC when it comes to Celiac.

      Celiac for dummies

      I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?

      Wow! Thank you @trents I really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.

You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
