Typical Vent...and Thankful For This Site

Well I am going to eat out today. I have been strictly avoiding eating out for the last 3-4 weeks to get my DH to heal up. Its healed barely..and now I have 2 social lunch/dinner things going on this week. Today is lunch, which I pretty much think I am safe, based on things I found on here. I am starting to fear the DH, its not that its just annoying its only on a tiny part of me and each time it seems to spread out a little more...I am in fear of it now.

I have another fancy dinner engagement Saturday, that I pretty much want to not go because the place seems so unsafe to eat at, I checked their menu and called them.. Its several hours long, with food, appetizers, drinks...etc. Well I can't drink and not eat! So I am planning to eat before hand, I don't want to bring in my own food because its a pretty formal dinner...now its just making me not want to go. Our good friends are going anymore either, so that makes it a less social event. Just Blah!

But...I am so thankful for this site, at least what I can't find online about food, usually there is some post somewhere on this site about eating out at a particular restaurante...etc! I am thankful I can be informed before I make any food choices!

Yep! Pretty "typical"! Maybe spice it up by saying you are dining with the president or negotiating a peace treaty with Martians?

ON the fancy dinner, here's what I would do - Eat first but take some little treats - like candy, nuts, cheese sticks etc. Go out like you are going to the restroom to eat them if you can't eat them at the table. Who knows who you may be sitting with, they may be OK with eating a snack. Now a cute little cocktail purse won't hold much. This is why husbands/male dates have large pockets in thier jackets.

Just thought...I'm assuming your a she, if you are a he, just skip the cocktail purse part and use your pockets. Or have a cocktail purse if that would work with your outfit! :D Or if your a she & your date is a she, one of you will have to have a bigger purse. If your date is a female kangaroo, you are in luck on pocket space!

Did you talk to the head chef at the restaurant? If not give them a call and ask if he/she can can talk to you before the event. The chef will know what is being served and should be able to tell you what is safe. I went to one event a little bit back where it turned out pretty much everything but dessert was safe and the chef gave me and others a choice of the cake or a fresh fruit salad.

I still ate very lightly at the event and made sure I had eaten before I went. No one commented about how I pushed my food around more than I ate it as everyone was too busy socializing.

Good luck and I hope you are able to find something that works for you and you enjoy the events.

I haven't had to deal with this since gluten-free, but I have a TON of times as a vegetarian. My company does a lot of catered in, buffets, and dinners out with small menus. I try to coordinate with the planner ahead of time, if I know the person (like my department's admin). Otherwise, I show up early and talk to the first server I find. Bring it up right away, because if it is a planned meal, the kitchen will have to make something for you. If you wait until the food is being served, you have to wait. I often get my food first or after everyone else. I have gotten good at waiting until everyone else at the table has their food before eating.

I will say, though, now that I am gluten-free and a vegetarian, I have gotten a "bring our own food" on cater in days. I get that they cannot accomondate both of those things. Sigh!

Welcome @JoJo0611. That is a valid question.  Unfortunately the short answer is slim to none.  Be proactive, when the diagnosis process is completed, start GFD.  Remember also that the western diet is deficient in many nutrients that governments require fortification.  Read the side of a breakfast cereal box. Anti-tTG antibodies has superseded older serological tests It has a strong sensitivity (99%) and specificity (>90%) for identifying celiac disease. A list of symptoms linked to Celiac is below.  No one seems to be tracking it, but I suspect that those with elevated ttg, but not diagnosed with Celiac Disease, are diagnosed with celiac disease many years later or just die, misdiagnosed.  Wheat has a very significant role in our economy and society.  And it is addictive.  Anti-tTG antibodies can be elevated without gluten intake in cases of other autoimmune diseases, certain infections, and inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. Transient increases have been observed during infections such as Epstein-Barr virus. Some autoimmune disorders including hepatitis and biliary cirrhosis, gall bladder disease. Then, at 65 they are told you have Ciliac Disease. Milk protein has been connected to elevated levels.   Except for Ireland and New Zealand where almost all dairy cows are grass fed, commercial diaries feed cows TMR Total Mixed Rations which include hay, silage, grains and concentrate, protein supplements, vitamins and minerals, byproducts and feed additives. Up to 80% of their diet is food that cannot be eaten by humans. Byproducts of cotton seeds, citrus pulp, brewer’s grains (wheat and barley, rye, malt, candy waste, bakery waste. The wheat, barley and rye become molecules in the milk protein and can trigger tTg Iga in persons suseptible to Celiac. I can drink Grass fed milk, it tastes better, like the milk the milkman delivered in the 50's.  If I drink commercial or Organic milk at bedtime I wake with indigestion.

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.
