Reading today i now see that my peanut M&M addiction is not really an abnormal thing in the world of gluten intolerant individuals. Man i love those things, its like sex in my mouth at times. At other times i could not be bothered. It seems that i crave them more when i have been glutened. My girlfriend keeps telling me that i might straightup just turn into one.........

LOL! I think of M&M's as an inferior cousin to Smarties, but since my Smartie days are over, I'm going crazy over chocolate M&M's, not to mention Rolo and Curly Wurly! Then again, chocolate always a good substitute for sex, lol!!!

MySuicidalTurtle Enthusiast

I like the regular M+M's lots.

Guest BERNESES

In order of chocolate orgasm power:

1. Reese's peanut butter cups

2. Peanut M and M's

3. Snickers ice cream bars

All are better smeared with a big spoon of peanut butter. Yummmmm

After feeling sorry for myself ever since I learned I have dairy and soy as well as gluten intolerance, because I couldn't find ANY dairy/soy/gluten free chocolate, another member of my local celiac support group found me some 'Elite' chocolate bars made in Israel especially for passover which are gluten-free/df/sf. The only problem is they are TOOOOO good. I was so desperate before I found that chocolate that I bought and regularly wore a tee shirt that said "Drop the chocolate and nobody gets hurt." I plan to wear than shirt to my local support group meeting tomorrow to show the friend who informed me about the gluten-free/df/sf chocolate. ;)

Hey detox, thanks for posting your M&M habit. I had no idea that I could eat those. What other chocolate goodies are safe in Canada?

Guest BERNESES

Burdee- I know of another bar that is gluten-free/lactose free and soy free too (I forget the name). I'm not sure about Casein but I'll check the next time I go to the grocery store. I'll let you know- they are delicious! B

Snickers Ice Cream bars are gluten-free?! :D

I love those things! Maybe it would be better if I didn't know that.

Yummy! I'm so excited.

I've been noticing a slime on my M&Ms lately. It's white and gross! Maybe they got wet or in the sun or something. But I'm noticing it in almost every bag. :(

Smarties are a no no? I didn't realize that.

Yeah, it's really not good when one person can down the "pounder" (14 oz) of M&Ms by herself in one day. :D

It's my understanding that some PURE cocoa powder is soy free, and if that's the case, you can make lots of tasty things (including hot chocolate and the chocolate coconut pie recipe I posted). If you can't find any soy free cocoa powder (I thought Merika said that Scharfen-burger was, but I don't remember), you may be able to find cocoa nibs (just roasted coco beans, no processing) and chop them up in a blender into your own powder.

I believe smarties are gluten free. I think they are made by Nestle, which is a brand that will clearly list gluten in the form of wheat, rye, barley, oats on the label and if one of those 4 things are not on there then it will be safe.

I LOVE M&M's(the mint ones you can get around Christmas are delicious but I also eat alot of the regular kind-I can go through a bag pretty quick)

Snickers, Snickers ice cream bars, the list goes on...hard to narrow it down because I love so much.

I love M&M's but can't really cope with milk chocolate at the moment, so I'm feeding my chocolate addiction with Green and Black's Dark and Maya Gold (orange spice) which are gluten-free and dairy-free (they have soya lecithin in it. Does that count as soy?) I was introduced to them by a vegan co-worker in the UK, and they rock. Whole Foods carry them. The espresso one is really good too, but it actually overamps on the coffee flavour a bit for me. :)

B) Ladies and gents, the only substitute for sex is...well, there is none. And it's ALWAYS gluten-free (or can you get traces of gluten if you swallow?)...

I CANT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE CRAVING PEANUT MNMS AND REESES PBC!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE A VERY BAD HABIT!!!!!! EVERY MORNING BEFORE I GO TO WORK (IM A 4TH GRADE NYC SCHOOL TEACHER WITH LOTS OF STRESS) I ALWAYS HAVE THEM FOR BREAKFAST!!!!! I DONT KNOW HOW ID GET THROUGH MY MORNING WITHOUT IT. AS SOON AS IM AWAKE, I HEAD FOR THE FREEZER WHERE I KEEP THEM, EAT 1 OR 2, THEN GET A COFFEE AND R. PBC. EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FEEL LIKE IM THE ONLY PERSON AT 7 IN THE MORNING, DRIVING, HAPPILY STUFFING FACE WITH CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!! :(

WHATS THE CONNECTION HERE WITH celiac disease????? :o

I USED TO HAVE AN EVEN WORSE ADDICTION TO PEANUT BUTTER, WHICH ID SPREAD ON PLAIN RICE CAKES AND EAT ABOUT 4 OR 5 TIL I WAS COMPLETELY STUFFED. ID EVEN HAVE IT FOR DINNER!!!!!!!

I WONDER WHY???????? THIS CRAVING IS CRAZY AND I WISH I DIDNT HAVE IT. I TRY TO KEEP THIN AND I DO, BUT WHEN I GORGE ON MNMS, R. YES, THATS TRUE. CHOCOLATE COMES VERY CLOSE THOUGH......

GOOD QUESTION YOU RAISED ABOUT GETTING TRACES OF GLUTEN----NEVER CONSIDERED THAT ONE BEFORE!!!!!! LOLOLOL

I WOULD THINK THAT YOU COULD GET VERY SMALL GLUTEN THAT WAY....WHY NOT, IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT??????

Guest BERNESES

Yes- sex is gluten free but you can't get a disease from M and M's and you don't need a condom (and not everyone on the board has sex ;)! I am CONVINCED that the peanut butter, for me, anyway, is a protein craving because I eat tons of it after I get over a glutening. I could LIVE on it.

BTW, for those of you that have a Trader Joe's nearby, you have to try David Glass's chocolate truffle cake. It's basically a flourless chocolate cake and it is pure chocolate love. WARNING: the reduced fat one is NOT gluten-free so you can't skimp on calories but iof you're going to eat such decadence, who cares about calories? You can find it at other places too. I know my local upscale market carries it. YUM!

I've been on both a Baby Ruth kick and an M&M kick. I believe it to be because I felt deprived from all the stuff I couldn't have that I would want something yummy and candy bars were a yummy option. I've gotten a lot better though. I used to eat at least one a day and now I'm down to a couple times a week.

new celiac Newbie

This is funny because ever since I was diagonsed, which was in April, I eat a ton of peanut M & M's and reese peanut butter cups. I guess I just figure it is because our bodies are not getting something it needs... I need to stop because I am starting to gain the weight back that I lost....

Hello all! My life in the last five years has been crazy. I got married in 2020 at the age of 27, pregnant with our first child almost two months later, gave birth in 2021. We had another baby in April of 2023 and our last baby this March of 2025. I had some issues after my second but nothing ever made me think, "I should see a doctor about this." After having my last baby this year, my body has finally started to find its new rhythm and balance...but things started to feel out of sorts. A lot of symptoms were convoluted with postpartum symptoms, and, to top it all off, my cycle came back about 4m postpartum. I was having reoccurring migraines, nausea, joint pain, numbness in my right arm, hand and fingers, tummy problems, hives. I finally went to my PCP in August just for a wellness check and I brought up my ailments. I'm so thankful for a doctor that listens and is thorough. He ended up running a food allergy panel, an environmental respiratory panel, and a celiac panel. I found out I was allergic to wheat, allergic to about every plant and dust mites, and I did have celiac. I had an endoscopy done on October 3 and my results confirmed celiac in the early stages! I am truly blessed to have an answer to my issues. When I eat gluten, my brain feels like it's on fire and like someone is squeezing it. I can't think straight and I zone out easily. My eyes can't focus. I get a super bad migraine and nausea. I get so tired and irritable and anxious. My body hurts sometimes and my gut gets bloated, gassy, constipated, and ends with bowel movements. All this time I thought I was just having mom brain or feeling the effects of postpartum, sleep deprivation, and the like (which I probably was having and the celiac disease just ramped it up!) I have yet to see a dietician but I've already been eating and shopping gluten-free. My husband and I have been working on turning our kitchen 100% gluten-free (we didn't think this would be so expensive but he assured me that my health is worth all the money in the world). There are still a few things to replace and clean. I'm already getting tired of reading labels. I even replaced some of my personal hygiene care for myself and the kids because they were either made with oats or not labeled gluten-free. I have already started feeling better but have made some mistakes along the way or have gotten contamination thrown into the mix. It's been hard! Today I joked that I got diagnosed at the worst time of the year with all the holidays coming up. I will just need to bring my own food to have and to share. It will be okay but different after years of eating "normally". Today I ordered in person at Chipotle and was trying not to feel self-conscious as the line got long because they were following food-allergy protocols. It's all worth it to be the healthiest version of myself for me and my family. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little overwhelmed and a little overloaded!  I am thankful for this community and I look forward to learning more from you all. I need the help, that's for sure!

On the AIP diet, all processed foods are eliminated.  This includes gluten-free bread.  You'll be eating meats and vegetables, mostly.  Meats that are processed, like sausages, sandwich meats, bacons, chicken nuggets, etc., are eliminated as well.  Veggies should be fresh, or frozen without other ingredients like sauces or seasonings.  Nightshade vegetables (eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers) are excluded.  They contain alkaloids that promote a leaky gut and inflammation.  Dairy and eggs are also eliminated.   I know it sounds really stark, but eating this way really improved my health.  The AIP diet can be low in nutrients, and, with malabsorption, it's important to supplement vitamins and minerals.

Thank you for responding and for prayers.  So sorry for your struggles, I will keep you in mine.  You are so young to have so many struggles, mine are mild by comparison.  I didn't have Celiac Disease (celiac disease) until I had my gallbladder removed 13 years ago; at least nothing I was aware of.  Following surgery: multiple symptoms/oddities appeared including ridges on fingernails, eczema, hair falling out in patches, dry eyes, upset stomach constantly and other weird symptoms that I don't really remember.  Gastro did tests and endoscopy and verified celiac disease. Re heart: I was born with Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) and an irregular heartbeat, yet heart was extremely strong.  It was difficult to pick up the irregular heartbeat on the EKG per cardiologist.  I had Covid at 77, recovered in 10 days and 2 weeks later developed long Covid. What the doctors and nurses called the "kickoff to long Covid, was A-fib.  I didn't know what was going on with my heart and had ignored early symptoms as some kind of passing aftereffect stemming from Covid.  I was right about where it came from, but wrong on it being "passing".  I have A-fib as my permanent reminder of Covid and take Flecainide every morning and night and will for the rest of my life to stabilize my heartbeat.

When I accidentally consume gluten it compromises the well-being of my heart and arteries. Last time I had a significant exposure, about six months ago, I had AFib for about ten days. It came on every day around dinner time. After the ten days or so it went away and hasn't come back.  My cardiologist offered me a collection of pharmaceuticals at the time.  But I passed on them.
    • klmgarland
So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure! Thank you kitty kitty   I am going to look this diet up right away.  And read the paleo diet and really see if I can make this a better situation then it currently is.
