Hey all.. haven't been here in awhile but I thought this was worth letting everyone know. I am on doxycycline because it is believed I got Lyme Disease. I've been on it 7 days, and have been feeling progessivley worse. Joint aches, stomach issues, horrible headaches.. when I looked up this drug today it says that the drug contains Wheat Starch which IS gluten. I have no doubt of this as I am SICK AS A DOG. I've called my doctor and asked to be put on something else.

UGH. I wish I would have thought to ask. I've been gluten-free since I found out a I had celiac at the end of January. This is the first time i've had something like this happen. I hope it doesn't take long to start feeling good again. =(

It may be the drug that is causing the worsening symptoms....or the symptoms may be caused by the worsening of the Lyme Disease. My daughter had it years ago, and while she was taking Doxycycline, her symptoms continued to worsen (joint pain, headaches, stomach issues, and fatigue). After she finished taking it, I insisted that she be prescribed a higher dosage and remain on it longer or to be placed on a stronger medication. I can't recall if she was prescribed a higher dosage or placed on another medication, but after the second go-round of medication, she finally began to feel better.

Wheat protein is gluten, not wheat starch. Sounds like there is enough residual gluten in the starch to get you though. I hope you can find a doxycycline pill that's gluten-free and that you feel better soon.

I had the same reaction to Doxycycline. I got so sick and my headaches were so bad they were thinking menigitis and wanted to test me for it. Not a chance. But I did stop the drug and slowly started to feel better. Doxy is great drug and they us it as a malaria coctail when you travel to those countries. I hope they have something else for me when I am ready to travel.

according to glutenfreedrugs.com most major doxycycline manufacturers (mylan, west-ward, and watson) are all gluten free. Which manufacturer is your doxycycline from?

I did find that according to livestrong.com brand name Doryx has wheat starch in it, but that is only the brand name. Generic manufacturers can use whichever inactive ingredients they want, and from what I've seen most generally use corn starch.

I used doxycycline maybe 4 times a year, for a week or so at a time, for acne treatment. I've never had a gluten reaction, but it IS hard on the stomach and cause headaches, just like many antibiotics. I don't recall what brand I use, but my pharmacist checked for me and said it was gluten-free.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
