Would Small Amounts Have Smaller Effect?

This is something I think I have noticed. Please tell me if you think this might be an accurate observation.

I've been my best to be 100% gluten free. I live at home, have a gluten free kitchen. I got glutened a few weeks ago and felt like poop. I got better. The story of our lives. :)

Anyway, then I moved back to school. Because I just got diagnosed, I am splitting my time between my two homes. At school I have two roommates. They understand the severity of the disease. But I do not have a gluten free kitchen. I do have my own pots and pans, however.

At school, I feel like poop. Not post glutening diarreah+brain fog+everything that comes with it, feeling really sick, but I mean an overall blah. I am extremely lethargic and quite depressed. I'm bloated.

Do you think these symptoms could be happening from things 'slipping in' constantly, as opposed to a full-fledged glutening where the pains and stuff are hardcore?

Thanks.

Lorka

I don't have the answer cuz I'm wondering the same thing.

I'm definately not sick like I was and I don't have depession anymore but I think I feel more tired and a little run down even though I'm not doing much of anything. I had more energy before and also I have bloating constantly now. I'm not complaining since I'm not really in pain anymore but like you said...I just kinda feel blah. I know I'm not getting any gluten...I'm sure of it....it just seems like my body's going through some changes.

Are you guys getting enough iron? Taking multivitamins?

I only started taking some vitamins a couple days ago...I'm hoping it will help with the energy. Does it take awhile for vitamins to start working? Someone said while the body is healing it uses more energy...could it be a good sign that I'm feeling kind of beat up right now?

Rachel - have you been tested for Type II - delayed food reactions. Same question for the person who posed the initial question. This can well be the answer to all those celiacs who still have digestive and intestinal problems long after going gluten-free. I have had the DF reactions for many years and this can make you really miserable. Gluten may be only part of the problem. There are blood tests available. I have a naturopathic doctor who does not have confidence in them and has a plan that he uses with his patients that he finds most satisfactory. If there is any interest I can post the general outline of it. I hate to tell you - but it does mean there is yet more stuff you can't eat :(

Claire, I am very interested in this plan you mentioned as I feel pretty much like the others.

If you have the time, please give us the general idea.

Thanks a lot.

I am also very interested: is this similar to what they do in the immunolabs?

Claire,

I did have type II food sensitivity testing done at Great Smokies and it came back totally fine. They said I only had a very low reaction to mustard and alfalfa out of over 100 foods. Not a problem avoiding those even though they said the reaction was so low it was not necessary to avoid them...just rotate them. Sometimes I wonder about the test but it was expensive so I'm not going to repeat it. I'd like to know about the plan you're talking about though.

Oh yeah...I don't really feel like I'm getting any "delayed" reactions or any gluten type reactions. Sometimes I just feel weird after eating and other times I'm fine. When I was still on gluten I was getting reactions from everything I ate ...no matter what it was. Thats why I did the Great Smokies test. If I get glutened badly the same thing will happen again for about a week. Lately its been kind of random....sometimes I'm fine after eating. Other times I just feel weird. Is this normal? I've only been on the diet a month now.

Body dysmorphia experience. When I was at the worst of my gluten problem I use to get chronic constipation; I would spend long time sitting on the toilet. One day as I was tired of sitting, I rested my head on my hands and my elbows on my knees, as soon as I felt the pressure of my elbows on my knees the perception of my body changed to that of a tarantula; I visualized and it felt real. The perception went away as soon as I removed the pressure on my knees, I deducted that the pressure of my elbows on the knees caused the sensation, so I repeated the position and the sensation of having the body of a tarantula happened each time. I have not had that experience since then because I started a gluten-free diet short after. I wonder if those people that look distorted to themselves in the mirror could have something similar but with the responsible sensory contacts located on their feet. I want to document this experience because it might help some research or others, it sounds crazy but I feel the right thing to do is to share it.

Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes
