Who knew turkeys would be so difficult?  :(  Hope they feel better soon!

Here is a cute chick and Corgi story.  A guy I know has some little chicks in a pen his basement until he can put them outside.  He has been introducing the Corgis to them.  He hopes they will use their herding instincts to keep them in the yard and get them to come in at night.  Went down stairs to find his female Corgi.  She wasn't  coming up to go out for the night.  She was laying beside the pen and refused to budge.  One of the baby chickies had slipped out.  The Corgi was keeping the chick trapped between her body and the pen so she couldn't escape.  Chick was enjoying a snuggle with a warm dog.

Awww.  That's adorable!

Butch is hoping one of the poults escapes so they can play 'ball' together......

Loey Rising Star

My tough week with turks continues.  Yesterday goy up and one of the inside poults kind of staggered out of the box and collapsed, gasping for air.  She died about an hour later.  The other two also looked feverish and were sneezing so I walked down to the chicken store (my truck is broken again) and got some antibiotic.  Made them water and food with tetracyclin and kept them inside so they'd be a little quieter.  They ate a ton but staggered around to get to and from the food.  When they'd try to scratch their heads (I assume because their noses were stuffed) they'd kind of fall over.  So sad to watch.

Didn't want to get up this morning and look, but when I cam into the room they were both up and standing in the pen saying "Where's our scrambled egg???"  Still feverish (they lay directly under the heat lamp and then spread their wings because it's too hot) and one has crusty goo all over his beak, but at least they're still up and moving.

If antibiotics are going to help, they should start feeling better this afternoon or tomorrow morning.  I'm thinking they have a mycobacterial infection - which is common in poultry but not usually bad - overlayed with another bacterial infection from being so stressed in that cage for three weeks.  The tetracycline is only minimally effective against the myco but should take care of anything else they have.  As will just being less stressed.

Gloria is fine so far.  I don't think I'll do turkeys again.  This is way too stressful.

Oh Jess, so sorry. Keeping you, your family & the turks in my prayers!

Love & lots of healing (((hugs))),

Loey

Aw Jess, the poor wee sick ones:(. Stressful indeed-- hope the abx do the trick. You're a good mama;)

I agree- she's a totally awesome mama to all of her babes (human & turkey, etc)

Thanks for a much needed smile. DS didn't get the internship, DH STILL has not heard about the job (he's assuming he didn't get it) and I just found out a dear friend of mine lost her brother on Friday and her 103 year old mother Monday night. I am so grateful that they made it to the party in NJ. Her mom and mine found us for each other when we were both hospitalized and were each in private rooms. We talked on the phone (from our hospital rooms) all night for weeks and have been friends for decades.  Just a sad day all around. Thank God for my psillies!!!!!

Hugs Lo:(. I'm so sorry about your friend's losses and your son not getting the internship:(. Don't give up hope yet on the job-- ya never know:). Or maybe something more desire able will come along:)

Kharregine, sweet story:).

So a couple weeks ago I'm at the doctor and she thinks she feels something in the thyroid area. I go for the ultrasound, and they detect a largish area that they feel is a nodule. Evidently nodules over one centimeter are suspicious and need to be biopsied. The area in question is one and a half.

This morning, I went for the biopsy that they rushed and arranged in only 2 days. Not only did the radiologist not find a nodule at all, when he compared today's ultrasound to the last one, he said it was nothing more than a slight difference in the tissue and normal for me.

Talk about relieved......

True dat! The radiologist and the tech apologized and I'm like-- please! All appointments like this should end this way!

They said that this doesn't happen often, but even so they have had patients who come in all psyched up to have the test and insist on it anyway.

Can you imagine???

No! What excellent news, Patteigh! :)

Sorry to hear about DS, Loweeeee......he sounds like a winner, though -- he'll get something fantastic!

Thank God they were wrong! It's so nice to hear good news. Thank you for your kind words - I needed encouragement today  :) I guess everything hit me at once.

DS is doing well and already set up a full-time (unpaid) internship with the public defender's office. You may recall he did that part time last summer as well as working at The Providence Hospital. He didn't enjoy the hospital (data entry 8 hrs a day with no breaks) but he was paid for that. Tony LOVED the PD's Office (he loves wearing suits and gets to do that while helping people). He'll also study for the LSAT's and tutor. He already has a house rented wih 8 friends for senior year and although his regular roommates won't be there this summer, he knows all the people who are subletting.

It's Superman I'm most worried about. He's really down and worried that he'll never get a job & we'll lose everything. I do remind him that we have a wonderful son and a great marriage (it would really suck if we didn't). Luckily we've been together long enough to face the strains of money on a marriage several times and thankfully we made it through and came out stronger. I do believe he'll find a job but I just hate to see him hurting. Now that I'm off the evil meds I'm a light sleeper and if he can't sleep I get up with him.

Thank you, he is a winner and I was proud with the way he sprung into action as soon as he heard they weren't taking him.

Thank you all for rallying around me. There are so many people that have it worse than we do but it's still scary when you have to live off all the money saved over 25 years. Thank God we saved.

Sorry LoLo. :(  Things are really hard out there now.  I still don't have a job, but then, I don't really want one.  I'm not sure how I managed to spent the last few years actually getting up and going to work; I feel like I lived in a fog of exhaustion for a long time.

To make a little extra money I started writing at textbroker.com.  You have to have good grammar and punctuation, and it isn't a lot of money, but it is something and you can work at your own pace.  It takes a while to get set up and you have to send in a writing sample and a W-9 and prove your a US resident.

Turks are still the same this morning (which I guess is good - at least they aren't getting worse).  We were all out playing yesterday and I didn't bring them in until they were falling asleep on their feet.  I decided that happy is a healthier thing than quiet and resting, which they weren't inclined to do anyway.

I also discovered that there's a hawk in the neighborhood.  Interesting to watch the babies dive for cover when it swooped.  I ended up sitting outside with them for several hours to keep everybody safe.

Thanks my friend. :)  I can relate to the fog & exhaustion. I'm glad you found something from home. Right now I can't sit at a computer for long stretches so hopefully someday ...

I'm glad you're spending so much time with the babies. I bet it's therapeutic for them, as well as, you. Keeping you all in my prayers!

Hello my dearest psillies. Wanted you all to be the first to know that Superman got the job offer today with the Medical Monitoring Company.  :D  :D  :D  :D

Thank you for the unwavering support and love over the past years. I truly don't think I could have made it through without each and every one of you!!! I never imagined when I was first diagnosed with Celiac that through the illness I would gain a wonderful new family. I love you all dearly!!!!!

So happy for you and your fam, Lowee!  It's about time!

Turks are still kicking.  I actually may be believe that they're sort of getting better - less wobbly and spend less time under the heat lamp.  It's been sunny the last few days so we've gone out for a few hours in the afternoon to dig through the grass and look for anything exciting.  Snuffles still spends much of her time lying down, but at least she was lying down in the sunshine.

Saw an eagle yesterday, and Seuss saw or heard something too so he brought his girls into the pen where they'd be safe.  Funny to watch those birds.

SO glad to hear the turks seem better. I know that they're a great source of comfort to you and your family. I'll continue to keep them (and everyone here) in my prayers.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful posts and emails. Superman slept well last night for the first time in 20 months. Tomorrow he'll start cutting back on his coffee intake (can't be running to the bathroom during surgery). I will expect him to be sleepy and grouchy. After all he's done for me I think I can deal with it.

Love, (((hugs))) and thanks to all of you dear sweet psillie people!

P.S. We'll soon drop the label of the "unemployed/sick" family on the block. Our neighbors moved a year ago and we just heard they have to short sell their house. "There but for the grace of God go I."

Well, my past has been remembered in public. A former colleague writes a weekly column online about computer security. I got a heads-up from him that he had mentioned me in today's edition.

This was the time leading up to my diagnosis in mid 2000, when my health was in the crapper, BTW.

Wow Poeter, I was impressed with you before I read the article. Now I'm even more impressed!!!!   :D  :D  I can only imagine how incredible your work is now that you're diagnosed and no longer in the crapper (figuratively & literally).

Well, apparently summer has arrived. Winter ended yesterday. The power company flipped to summer time-of-use charges today, and tossed in a rate hike to liven it up.

Lovely weather, so we mostly set up the back deck and had supper out there. The barbecue isn't set up yet. Maybe I'll get to it tomorrow. Hit 20C (68F) this afternoon under sunny skies, and it is expected to stay like that until Monday, when it will be slightly cooler.

Celiac Mindwarp Community Regular

Ooo bbq weather, and it is a bank holiday here on Monday. Ours looks like an old steam locomotive, it is huge. Mr Mindwarp will be very excited.

What a great mention of you and your illustrious past, POeter! Appears that you were The Oracle even back then.....   :)  ;)

Vynceghnt, that is a fascinating graphic....those two girls seem mesmerized by that impressive sceptre, as if it is guiding them, magically, somewhere.....now, the dark girl had best tuck in that sash -- it is just waiting to get caught in something.  HATE when that happens.....

Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.
    • trents
@BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.
    • BlessedinBoston
No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

@Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test. Thiamine, gastrointestinal beriberi and acetylcholine signaling.  https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12014454/ Best wishes!
