Eating Gluten Before Test

Hi all,

Just came back from the doctors and I have to have a test for celiac in January. I have been gluten-free for 6 weeks now (as far as I am aware) after years of generally not feeling well, and now am feeling fantastic. I had joint pain, hair loss, bloating, pain, tiredness etc. Hair stopped shedding after 4 weeks and joint pain went after 4 days, so obviously I don't want to go back there again!

Doctor suggested I should find out for sure if it is celiac or gluten intolerance, and I should eat gluten everyday. I asked her how much, and her reply was 'enough'.

I am wondering how much is 'enough' to get an accurate result? Any thoughts would be appreciated,

Oh, just enough <_< to get the doc's office reimbursed by the health insurance when the claim is submitted......

did this dosing genius bother to send you to a lab now for some blood samples to be drawn for a celiac panel, so they could be compared to something done in the future, to see if there is any change when you do ingest gluten, or is she waiting for the New Year ?

Just waiting for New Year. I got some blood tests back for annual health check and all fine, except for big vitamin D3 deficiency. I started eating gluten again and symptoms coming back :(

My doctor told me 2 slices of wheat bread a day for 4 to 6 months . . . and even then it might not be enough. If you go through with it and your tests are still negative, it does not mean you don't have celiac. It means your doctor is uninformed and put you through this for no apparent reason.

Regardless of the test results, will you do anything differently? You already know gluten makes you ill, how will taking this test change anything?

Antibody tests are different for everybody. My blood test went from positive to negative after just 2 weeks of being gluten free and didn't show a positive after eating gluten for 3 months to get retested. My son's blood test remained positive even after being on the diet for 6 months. He finally showed improvement after 1 year.

this is such a crazy thing, I don't get it at all. a nurse from my health insurance company called the other day to consult about some other issues I had been having. I told her about my going gluten free for the past 2 months, and how I felt worlds better. I had a colon biopsy earlier this year, and was told no celiac.

she told me I should go to my doctor and confirm that I am gluten intolerant. I asked her how that would be done, she said he would have me eat gluten and if I got sick that would be it. I asked her if she would like to eat rat poison and see if she got sick.

You felt better off gluten. You started a challenge and your symptoms are returning. This is confirmation that you are at least gluten intolerant.

Personally, I'd skip the testing if I were you. In fact, that's what I did for myself. You know you have a problem with gluten. No doctor confirmation required and (the best part!) You don't need a doc's Rx for treatment. You can control your diet all on your own.

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.

      thank you both for the insights. i agree, im going to back off on dairy and try sucraid. thanks for the tip about protein powder, i will look for whey protein powder/drinks!   i don’t understand why my doctor refused to order it either. so i’ve decided i’m not going to her again, and i’m going to get a second opinion with a GI recommended to me by someone with celiac. unfortunately my first appointment isn’t until February 17th. do you think i should go gluten free now or wait until after i meet with the new doctor? i’m torn about what i should do, i dont know if she is going to want to repeat the endoscopy, and i know ill have to be eating gluten to have a positive biopsy. i could always do the gluten challenge on the other hand if she does want to repeat the biopsy.    thanks again, i appreciate the support here. i’ve learned a lot from these boards. i dont know anyone in real life with celiac.

      Let me suggest an adjustment to your terminology. "Celiac disease" and "gluten intolerance" are the same. The other gluten disorder you refer to is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which is often referred to as being "gluten sensitive". Having said that, the reality is there is still much inconsistency in how people use these terms. Since celiac disease does damage to the small bowel lining it often results in nutritional deficiencies such as anemia. NCGS does not damage the small bowel lining so your history of anemia may suggest you have celiac disease as opposed to NCGS. But either way, a gluten-free diet is in order. NCGS can cause bodily damage in other ways, particularly to neurological systems.
