ARCHIVED Kefir Lovers/ Is Storebought Okay?
Helena replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Kefir is probably my favourite food! Tastes great with fruit/maple syrup. I've only seen kefir made with cow's (as opposed to goat's) milk in stores. I buy this kind: Open Original Shared Link . . . I like the kefir made from non-homogenized whole milk. Seriously, it is way better than ice cream. When the health food store is out of pinehedge kefir... -
ARCHIVED Take This Mind Test - It Is Freaky!
Helena replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
yellow wrench. I've always loved yellow and, well, when i'm asked to pick a tool, i automatically think of the game Clue--a game I haven't played for years but played a lot when I was a kid. It is the probably the only real life situation where I'm told to 'pick a tool'. A lot of the "tools" in the game aren't actual tools . . like the candlestick... -
ARCHIVED Difficult Decision Re: Cross Contamination

Thanks, cassidy. Good advice re: waiting. I should probably take it. -
ARCHIVED Difficult Decision Re: Cross Contamination
Helena posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I posted about this before . . .but I've reconsidered my decision, so here goes again. I have a very limited diet---the only grains I can eat are millet, rice, tapioca. I stopped eating millet, however, as Bob's Red Mill isn't safe for people with severe tree nut allergies, and the only other brand I could find is Oak Manor---they are nut-free but they... -
Thanks, Carla. I'm not as sensitive to gluten as a lot of people here . . . so I bet the 1 1/2 hour rule would work fine for me as well (I've haven't dated since before the celiac diagnosis.) But there's no way I'd kiss anyone 1 1/2 hours after eating anything I'm anaphylactic to. Elsewhere on the board, gfp (aka Steve) indicated that cows are not...

ARCHIVED Can Gluten Be Transfered From Body Fluids?
Helena replied to simplicity66's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I actually posted a similar question under another thread. . . so what I'm asking here is a bit repetitive. Re: bodily fluids and gluten . . .is it 100% that gluten is not passed through semen? I know that some allergens can be. Also, on the issue with animals eating gluten---I'm not so concerned about the *meat*, but what about milk? If cows don't... -
A recent study shows that allergens can stay in the mouth for more than 1 hour . . . Open Original Shared Link They conclude: "Waiting several hours and ingesting a peanut-free meal were more effective at reducing salivary peanut protein concentration than simple, immediate interventions." So in the case of peanuts, one's partner should wait a number...

The chicken dish sounds wonderful. I'm interested in trying the specialty sea salt too. I use sea salt, but I generally go for the less expensive sea salt. . . . I think, though, that all my dietary restrictions warrant splurging on food. On the elimination diet issue---My allergist put me on one of those a couple of years ago. I found this book...

I avoid onions and garlic too . . . they cause reflux for me. I *really* miss garlic! I don't know of any good substitute, but what I do is add extra flavourful mushrooms (I like s$#&ake and portabello) as well as fresh herbs (I grow oregano, sage, and rosemary in pots. Oregano and rosemary are really hard to kill off! They thrive in spite of neglect....

ARCHIVED Does Anyone's Throat Burn If They Eat Something They Shouldn't?
Helena replied to a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have a lot of allergies, and throat/mouth burning/itchiness/tingling is most often how I know if I've eaten something I shouldn't. With some foods, the reaction basically stops there although I sometimes get a few hives too. With other foods, I might develop other symptoms . . . in the worst case scenario, vomiting/nausea, involuntary gagging, major breathing... -
Sorry to hear that you're having such a rought time. That sounds really serious----the breathing problems especially. If the benadryl helps, it is definitely an allergy (don't you hate taking benadryl during the day? it makes me very sleepy) Do you think you should be taking an epi on such occasions? My allergist tells me to always take it if my breathing...

I've been experimenting with different types of rice---Lundberg sells gourmet rice varieties. I like Wehani rice and absolutely love the black/mahogany rice mix. Actually, I've switched to Lundberg recently. I like their plain brown rice *so* much better than any other brand of brown rice. Seems a bit spoiled to insist on eating gourmet rice . . .but...

ARCHIVED Other Allergies Common? A Bit Of A Vent...
Helena replied to Canadiangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, yes I can sympathise! I have a number of food allergies in additon to celiac disease. I sometimes find it awkward because I'm sure that some people think I'm kind of paranoid about my food. I have to be very careful because cross contamination could = anaphylaxis. I'm not really sure about shellfish---I got some hives with shellfish with the skin... -
ARCHIVED New Doctor - Allergy Testing
Helena replied to super-sally888's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks so much for the info. I'll try googling "cough variant asthma" and "reactive airway disease" as you suggested (although coughing isn't a major issue for me). My respirologist did send me for one of those methacholine challenge tests which came back negative. I don't generally wheeze----only slightly when exposed to cigarette smoke. But sometimes... -

ARCHIVED New Doctor - Allergy Testing
Helena replied to super-sally888's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
tarnalberry, do you have any links to recommend on "cough variant asthma"? My respirologist . . whom I've been seeing for a number of years now . . . does not believe I have asthma. All the tests which require me to breathe out are normal. She keeps me on as a patient because based on breathing tests (requiring me to inhale) she believes I have mild vocal... -

Okay, given my technical difficulties with my last posts I'm not even going to attempt to do multiple quotes So you've never ever had a reaction to peanuts? But your allergist decided that you are allergic based on a recent positive skin prick test? I don't know . . . that sounds suspect to me. How does the doctor know that it isn't a false positive...

ARCHIVED Can We Talk About Bandaids?
Helena replied to olalisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yeah, could be the adhesive. But also could be the latex. I'd talk to your doctor and get referred to an allergist especially if you are at risk of developing a latex allergy based on clinical history (environmental allergies; allergies to certain fruits and veggies) or occupation (i.e. health care worker). If you do have a latex allergy, you could have... -
Arrghhh!! I've totally messed up my posts. I posted once, then tried to edit . . .but instead must have hit "add post" and accidentally just quoted the entire first post. I didn't see the edited section at first. *Then* I tried to edit the first post and appeared instead to have accidentally rewritten my *first* post. Oh well. I think all of what I...

I forgot to add---not sure why you didn't react to the peanut butter. When is the last time you reacted? Some children do outgrow their peanut allergies. You don't want to unnecessarily restrict your life if you aren't allergic anymore. On the other hand, some people are still allergic but can tolerate a little bit before reacting. If this is the case...

ARCHIVED Nature's Gate Toothpaste gluten-free?
Helena replied to Helena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the suggestions. Still haven't gotten around to emailing Nature's Gate! -
Sorry to hear about the strawberries! I have trouble with lots of fruits and vegetables because of pollen allergies, too--but mostly with raw fruits and veggies (this is called oral allergy syndrome). The proteins that are similar to pollen proteins aren't heat stable so most people with this condition can eat cooked fruits and veggies. (There are exceptions...

ARCHIVED Nature's Gate Toothpaste gluten-free?
Helena replied to Helena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Guess I'd better contact the company before trying the toothpaste. Right now I'm using Crest, but I'd like to switch back to using toothpaste with more natural ingredients. Re: the baking soda idea---that's what my dentist suggested! I asked him about "natural" toothpastes and he said that baking soda works well for adults who don't require flouride...
