  1. Actually, your medicine is not free, if you think about it. Canadians pay huge taxes to fund their health care system so everyone pays out of their income. The US is not far behind with our HMO system. We can no longer go to a doctor of our absolute choice...you have to pick one from their lists or pay for a private physician. It was a private physician who...
  2. I totally agree with you, Tallforagirl, and will add what I learned from research and questioning the medical community, plus personal experiments myself. You cannot have a topical reaction to gluten, even if you have DH. A topical reaction is an allergic reaction, probably to wheat also, so even though the gluten won't get ya, the wheat will. It is important...
  3. If it makes you feel better, I have the same complex that you do! Nothing irritates me more than family members who live in complete and absolute denial about having a gluten problem! My whole family has serious issues and we have more autoimmune problems than most populations of small towns put together but I am now the official pain in the butt of my...
  4. Ahem....cough....cough......time to set someone straight here. American medical benefits may be somewhat limited but they are VASTLY greater than in most countries because we do not have socialized medicine....as of yet, anyway. The current administration seems hell bent on making it that way and I so hope not. Benefits also do not cause ignorance...

    ARCHIVED Seriously...

Jen....I seriously think you should see an allergist or naturopath to be tested for other food allergies/intolerances. I think you are probably not getting any gluten because you are taking it seriously and being very careful. People really get hung up on the idea they are being glutened and then develop fears about eating.....as you mentioned yourself. It...
  6. Bonjour, Julie......your written English is fine! You have made your point well and many here will understand what you are going through. You are going to have a problem because you have socialized medicine in Canada and they are always trying to save money. It is harder to have testing there but do not give up and be pushy about it to the doctor. Unfortunately...
  7. I had no idea that this was the "new" information being handed to diabetics! HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!! To even think that a diabetic would be told to eat what they want, as long as they take the pill is just plain stupid and grounds for malpractice, as far as I am concerned. My brother is a Type 1, who I STRONGLY believe also has celiac disease because of the...
  8. May I ask you if you yourself are comfortable with the knowledge that you have a problem with gluten? I ask because the ONLY person that matters in your decision making is you. Why would you care what doctors think about the way you were diagnosed or what others, whom you refer to as non-believers, think? I was diagnosed through blood work and dietary...
  9. It is so encouraging to see Celiacs who would reject a pharmacological, fake cure! However, I will add my thanks to Ryan who posted this info as it's always good to remain informed, even if it's for something I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. How could it work? Once gluten enters the gut, the reaction starts so even if gluten could bind to a substance...
  10. Nicole......I would keep an eye on your thyroid and do a blood panel every year....or if you develop symptoms of a problem. A TSH of slightly over 3 may be OK for you but that is considered to be on it's way to a lower functioning thyroid. If your T3 and T4 levels are in optimal ranges and you do not have symptoms of a low thyroid, then I wouldn't sweat it...

    ARCHIVED Candida

Lexi....I know it is very hard to give up foods that make you feel good BUT we tend to crave what is bad for us, especially if there is a candida problem. I was a carboholic when I started the diet and I went through hell for 2 weeks while I was withdrawing from sugar. I ate only whole grains but that doesn't make a difference to candida. Going gluten free...

    ARCHIVED Candida

Diflucan was developed specifically for yeast and fungal problems so I doubt it would damage your gut flora as it is designed to kill off those that are. As for it being a short term fix, it is not. Any systemic candida issue must be treated with the diet designed to rid the body of candida PLUS the use of antifungals, which will kill off the yeast as it...
  13. Cornmeal by itself is naturally gluten free so, unless this is a mix with other ingredients added, it would be gluten free.

    ARCHIVED Candida

To play devil's advocate here.....I have been on very short courses of DiFlucan years past for systemic candida problems and tolerated it very well. Yes, it can have nasty side effects but I was on it when I had full blown, undiagnosed Celiac and it helped me. It is amazing at killing off candida and my doctor prescribed it for me when I was on the diet about...
  15. It may not be helpful to you but if I don't have a problem with saying it's psychosomatic, when it applies to me also, you shouldn't be so defensive about it and think everyone is out to prove you wrong. You know, my story mirrors yours with all the issues you had growing up but I choose to react differently to it. I also was told once, only once, by a GI...
  16. With autoimmune hypothyroid, it can swing from hypo to hyper because of the fact it is autoimmune in nature and hard to control. Stress and many other factors will affect thyroid function. My antibody levels of my thyroid (blood work) were supposed to be under 40....this was the lab range for normal. Mine was 1200, which meant that my thyroid was being totally...
  17. Hello Mike.....I have a very short answer for you. Your blood work included the EMA (Endomysial) and that was detected. This test is 100% specific to Celiac Disease, meaning no other disease will cause a positive. That, coupled with your tTg, is 100% proof positive that you have Celiac Disease, never mind ALL the other stuff you have going on. A 5 week gluten...
  18. I am not sure what kinds of experiences you are looking for but I would venture to guess that there are very few food items that are knowingly advertised as gluten-free, which turn out to be non-gluten-free. I guess it also depends on where you live and how progressive liability laws are. I have had nothing but good experiences with restaurants and food...
  19. I would agree 100% with this and thanks for adding that! I in no way am trying to get people upset or challenge them in any way but I believe that if you are striving to live as completely gluten-free a life as possible, it's critical to learn the correct way in which a reaction occurs. There is much misinformation out there and people have a tendency to...
  20. Nicole....did they do an "EMA" test on you? This would be a blood test that should have been included on the Celiac panel. I ask because the EMA is 100% specific to Celiac....no other disease will cause a positive BUT Celiac. You are also hypothyroid...so am I. Anything over 3 is considered hypo by progressive doctors. I actually totally suppress my...
  21. It's perfectly OK to disagree but maybe I should make myself clearer. You cannot have a Celiac reaction to gluten unless it gets into your gut....that is proven medical fact. Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin and I have done enough research and doctor questioning to know this is correct information. I also work in the science field. Having said...
  22. I really think this is a non-issue, Lisa. Like yourself, I eat tons of fruits and veggies everyday....it's the mainstay of my diet. I always wash fruits and veggies off with a spray which dissolves the waxy substance, which is sold in Whole Foods and RINSE it well. I always am amazed that people worry about soap so much.....doesn't everybody rinse really...
  23. Nicole.....I know it can be very hard to believe when symptoms come and go but they absolutely can and, from all you have described, you are definitely a Celiac. My stomach, for about 12 years, felt like I was trying to digest glass after eating a meal. It was awful and I spent many a day in bed, barely able to move because of the pain after eating a meal...
  24. I almost have the same problem but for me, I believe it is purely psychosomatic and I has nothing to do with being glutened. You do have to ingest gluten for a true reaction to occur. My issue is when I get near a fast food joint, like McDonald's, when they are making the food and you can smell it everywhere in the vicinity of the restaurant. Dunkin' Donuts...
  25. newburyport.....your GI doctor is insisting on a biopsy even though you have had huge dietary response AND now tells you that villi never fully heal? I think you need to dump this person immediately! I did not have the biopsy because, like yourself, I had so many symptoms of Celiac AND my blood work was in the stratosphere. My tTg was 200 so that will...
