ARCHIVED Very Unusually Large Stools...
Gemini replied to mindyandy420's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you suffer from mal-absorption, then food will pass through and not much of it will be absorbed. This will result in larger stool volume or more numerous bowel movements. It's another one of those clues people do not recognize as being tied to mal-absorption and doctors ignore and tell you to eat more fiber! My niece had the same problem. I am a... -
It may be a good idea to have one of your glands, the defective one, removed. There are 4 parathyroid glands and almost always, it's just one that goes wonky. It can affect your blood calcium levels and this is considered a life-threatening condition. The reason for my advice to have the surgery is because it's minor surgery and no big deal....really. ...

When I go to London, I always rent an apartment. For the same price as a hotel room, you'll get much more room and a small kitchen for cooking. The only meal I end up eating in the flat is breakfast. London is an easy city for gluten-free food and I have never had any problems finding a good gluten-free meal when there. I usually have a big breakfast and...

ARCHIVED All My Make-up, Shampoo, And Lotion Has Gluten!
Gemini replied to ll79's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do agree with your statements as you defined them correctly. Yes, a person can have a reaction if they swallow enough shampoo but I personally am at a loss over this one. The smallest, tiniest amount of shampoo will be noticed, taste-wise in the mouth. Even if a person was not a Celiac or GS, who would voluntarily swallow shampoo all the time? I would be... -
ARCHIVED Eye Troubles
Gemini replied to BRS-07's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also have allergies that only affect my eyes. It will exacerbate the Sjogren's problem. If a person has dry eyes, really dry eyes, and have celiac disease, they should pursue a Sjogren's diagnosis because every other problem you have will affect the Sjogren's and can make it worse. Very often, allergies and Sjogren's are commonly seen together. Mold is... -
ARCHIVED I Didn't Realize Some People Cant Be Around Gluten
Gemini replied to Raynee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome! Anyone with Celiac Disease can most certainly have gluten in their kitchens and be around it. It is a matter of choice, not necessity. However, if there are small children in the house, it may be difficult to train them in the aspects of avoiding cross contamination so many CHOOSE to go completely gluten-free so they won't come into close, personal... -
ARCHIVED All My Make-up, Shampoo, And Lotion Has Gluten!
Gemini replied to ll79's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, my information is correct. If a person has a topical reaction from touching gluten, that's an allergy, not a Celiac reaction. There are no "types" of Celiac as far as that is concerned. For a Celiac reaction to occur, you MUST ingest a product internally. This is what triggers the autoimmune system to react. You really ought to read the book I mentioned... -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker gluten-free Mixes
Gemini replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This whole thread has been funny to read! I do have one thought on the B. Crocker line.....I never ate any boxed cookies or cake mixes because if you looked at the ingredients listing, you would see there was a lot of crap in the standard, gluten filled mixes. Stuff I could never fathom why people would eat. Then, at a gluten-free dine out a month ago... -
ARCHIVED Eye Troubles
Gemini replied to BRS-07's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There is a mouthwash called Biotene and it is made specifically for dry mouth. I use it, as directed, at night before I go to bed and it really helps with the dryness overnight. There is a whole line of Biotene products made specifically for Sjogren's/dry mouth problems. The mouthwash tastes good and also helps to protect the teeth against bacteria. -
ARCHIVED All My Make-up, Shampoo, And Lotion Has Gluten!
Gemini replied to ll79's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know where you got that information but it is incorrect. You may want to read the book: Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic by Dr. Peter Green. It is an extremely informative book about the disease and how to manage it well. It covers why you do not have to go gluten-free with topical products, except lip stick and like products. Of course, you absolutely... -
ARCHIVED Have Celiac - Eat Gluten And Feel Fine! Anyone Else?
Gemini replied to Nancy H's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nancy......I will be the first to admit it must be horribly difficult to be told you have a disease that you suffer little to no symptoms of. This is why it is hard for smokers to quit......you can smoke most of your life with little to no problems until you get into the "Golden years" period of your life and then it can become problematic. I am one who... -
ARCHIVED Eye Troubles
Gemini replied to BRS-07's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Lots of people who have never smoked can still have a cough for many different reasons. People always assume it's a smokers problem. My family pretty much all have Sjogren's and have never smoked. I used to smoke and our symptoms are all the same. Actually, having Sjogren's will give a person worse symptoms than anyone who smokes. Being that dry causes some... -
ARCHIVED Anyone React To Gluten Free Oats?
Gemini replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You mean to tell me that there are people getting paid to give this advice?!?! Oatmeal is a fantastic source of fiber and it keeps you full for hours. I always eat a bowl before hiking so I don't have to lug too much food with me. I just wish the gluten-free version didn't cost so much! It makes you think twice before making some oatmeal cookies... -

I believe the testing for Sjogren's are called SS-A and SS-B antibody. Simple little blood test. However, like Celiac, it may be negative while a person does have Sjogren's. I always test positive on blood work, if I have the disease, so I am lucky to be able to have answers. Doctors take you more seriously too, which is pretty pathetic. An older test used... -
ARCHIVED Trials For Celiac Vaccine Have Begun
Gemini replied to amber's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also totally agree with these statements, Momma Goose! Allergy is not the same as an intolerance. I used immunotherapy for my seasonal allergies and had great success with that but Celiac is entirely different. My immune system is wonky enough without introducing a vaccine which claims to allow people to eat whatever they want with no side effects. ... -
ARCHIVED Anyone React To Gluten Free Oats?
Gemini replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tolerate gluten-free oats just fine but I was a big oatmeal and fiber eater before my diagnosis. I think it has far more to do with tolerating fiber. If you ate a more processed diet beforehand, getting much more fiber in your body may be tough. You have to work up to fiber intake. There are those who may be allergic or intolerant of oats also but I think... -
ARCHIVED Hypo To Hyperthyroid Post Gluten Free
Gemini replied to Crayons574's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I experienced the same thing only it took me 4 years to go hyper. I am now in the process of redefining how much thyroid hormone I need but am taking much less. I would caution you on cutting your dosage in half without seeing a doctor and getting blood work done. Thyroid hormone is not something that should be based on guesswork. It affects other organ systems... -
ARCHIVED Eye Troubles
Gemini replied to BRS-07's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would have to agree with you on the dermatologist issue. In my opinion, they are some of the worst doctors on the planet, unless you have skin cancer. That is what they diagnose best because it's pretty easy. Many people with DH are told they have psoriasis and are given creams and lotions that rarely help much and these doctors NEVER look at a persons... -
ARCHIVED Eye Troubles
Gemini replied to BRS-07's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If your eyes are that dry, then it's almost a slam dunk for Sjogren's. It is never normal to have eyes that dry and just having blepharitis would not cause that much dryness. Blepharitis is most often linked with allergies. I would also recommend that you see an ophthamologist instead of a dermatologist. Dermatologists, from my own personal experience, are... -
ARCHIVED Should I Buy New Brushes?
Gemini replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you feel that you are a little OCD about things, then it might make you feel better if you replaced all of these items. It really isn't necessary, though. It's all up to your comfort level. The only way a reaction is possible is if you are replacing these items due to a topical wheat allergy and then I would probably replace them. You'd have to put the... -
ARCHIVED Mascara
Gemini replied to watkinson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
With this type of reaction, it's most likely an allergic reaction, not a true Celiac reaction. Swelling and hives are not something which happen with the internal, autoimmune reaction. You have to ingest, through the mouth, into the GI tract to spark a Celiac reaction. It's also very common for people to have a wheat allergy on top of Celiac Disease so this... -
ARCHIVED False Positives?
Gemini replied to reneelt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What this testing most likely shows is that your son is reacting to gluten, in the early stages of possible Celiac. He is probably too young to have accrued much intestinal damage so his tTg would be negative. Ditto for the EMA. It could take a person years for damage to show in blood work. The elevated IgG and IgA correspond to reaction to ingested gluten... -
Dairy may or may not be a problem for you but why cut it out of your diet completely unless you are symptomatic? I have to go dairy light but I can still tolerate small amounts without any problems. Not everyone needs to eliminate dairy and people do heal very well while consuming it, it all depends on you. I would just try cutting out all gluten, as you...

Newly Diagnosed.....chewing Tobacco
Gemini replied to kymom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Why is it there is always someone who likes to lecture people on tobacco use? I am sure that everyone who smokes and uses chewing tobacco knows it is not healthy for them but they need to come to their own decision about quitting. Any guy that has been diagnosed with Celiac and is going through the anger phase of things is not going to quit this habit overnight... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Iga Levels Increasing
Gemini replied to tclarkfl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do not be chagrined about anything.....there is a long learning curve to getting this disease right and absorbing all the information about autoimmune diseases. It's extremely important to do so because you need to be your own advocate with the medical profession because they do not always get it right.....especially with autoimmune disease. You will learn...
