I go to the dentist every 3 months for cleanings and other dental work and I have yet to come across anything which contains gluten. I have used everything they normally use, including the topical anesthetic, with no problems whatsoever. I have checked ingredient labels and had my dentist check himself as he is somewhat knowledgeable about Celiac with no...

ARCHIVED Being Around Gluten Foods Still Sets It Off?
Gemini replied to Jonbo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's what a tummy tuck is for, Jonbo! Congratulations on the weight loss.....good job! You may want to try a probiotic for the gassiness and distention as you could have an imbalance going on. Most recovering Celiacs do and will greatly benefit from populating their gut with good bacteria. It helps with the healing process. -
ARCHIVED Bleeding Gums, Sensitive Teeth
Gemini replied to SandyStPeteFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The blood work for Sjogren's are called SS-A and SS-B antibody. Be aware that this is another test where a person may be serio-negative yet still have the disease. I would bet that most people with Celiac and problem gums/teeth have Sjogren's, even though your dentist or doctor may not agree. Another clue is whether or not you can swallow a piece of... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Go To Hair Salons?
Gemini replied to Crayons574's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For all it's worth, I have my hair colored, permed on occasion and use the products they use on everyone. I've never had any kind of problem but I don't have a contact allergy to wheat on top of Celiac. As my head is always tilted back into the sink during a shampoo and conditioning, I have never had any problems with ingesting the products. You have to do... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Iga Levels Increasing
Gemini replied to tclarkfl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
tTg levels will also increase from other autoimmune problems like Sjogren's Syndrome, Hashi's thyroid disease, Type 1 diabetes, etc. This is why it is a poor choice on the physician's part to use any tTg repeat testing in regards to dietary compliance. The correct tests for dietary compliance are the Anti-Gliadin antibody tests for both IgA and IgG. These... -
ARCHIVED Bleeding Gums, Sensitive Teeth
Gemini replied to SandyStPeteFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
OK........that 'splains a lot! I think having Sjogren's, more so than celiac disease, can really give you a run for the money on tooth and gum health. It's a real b--ch to work so hard and STILL have a problem. I feel your pain in a big way! I am concerned, however, about your anemia. Although it may take awhile for that to get better, it should... -
ARCHIVED Bleeding Gums, Sensitive Teeth
Gemini replied to SandyStPeteFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Boy oh boy, am I an expert in this field! I always had major gum problems, which was odd because I am an avid flosser and have dental cleanings 4 times per year. I was diagnosed with celiac disease after 20+ years of symptoms at the age of 46. I am now 50. I disagree with your dentist on his reasoning for the inflammation. If you follow a strict gluten... -
Why would you think that following a gluten-free diet would compromise protein intake? I am not a big red meat eater either but eat a lot of fish and some chicken. There is also quinoa, beans and vegetarian sources of protein. I am eating more protein now than ever before because I have dumped much of the starches from my diet. As far as learning to read...

ARCHIVED Do I Need To Have The Biopsy Done?
Gemini replied to pinksmashing's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, I don't think so! The poster asked if a Celiac needed to go gluten-free on topical products and I answered with the most up-to date medical information that's out there. Are you suggesting that the current information is incorrect? I don't know how you came to this conclusion from my short answer. I never addressed whether or not someone was in denial... -
ARCHIVED Being Around Gluten Foods Still Sets It Off?
Gemini replied to Jonbo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have the same problem and it is definitely NOT a true glutening. I think it is just a psychosomatic occurrence.....your body is reacting to the smell of food that will make you sick if you eat it. Nothing wrong with that.......I view it as a protective mechanism. Any time I smell fast food, donuts, pizza, etc. or any gluteny type food, it smells... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Thyroid Problems
Gemini replied to ntfari09's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You are correct...Synthroid cannot be guaranteed as gluten-free anymore. I use Levoxyl, which is the generic form of Synthroid. It is really inexpensive and I have had no problems with it at all. I also take a compounded T3 hormone because I needed the T3 and most Rx forms of thyroid replacement only contain T4 hormone. There are also more natural routes... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Ketchup
Gemini replied to kimmeycat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may want to try Annie's products and they also do a gluten-free ketchup. It is sold in many regular food stores around me. They also have fantastic salad dressings and many are gluten-free. The trouble with the mainstream brands of food is they use a lot of high fructose corn syrup and other crappy products in their food lines. They may be gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Do I Need To Have The Biopsy Done?
Gemini replied to pinksmashing's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor is correct on the shampoo and lotion issue. If you feel you cannot use these products without ingesting them into your mouth, I would suggest finding gluten-free alternatives you are happy with. Otherwise, it should not be a problem, unless you have an additional wheat allergy, which is a different animal than an intolerance. Gluten cannot be... -
Delay Of Reaction And Symptoms Normal?
Gemini replied to loxleynew's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your welcome! One of the hardest things that comes with understanding any autoimmune disease is that symptoms can be wacky and sporadic, many people can have very different symptoms for the same disease and figuring all this out takes a doctor who thinks outside the box and doesn't rely on what was taught 50 years ago in med school. The main phrase... -
Delay Of Reaction And Symptoms Normal?
Gemini replied to loxleynew's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have always had delayed reactions and if you read up on Celiac Disease, many publications refer to this as being classic Celiac Disease reaction time. It takes awhile for the immune system to recognize the invader and then take appropriate action. You cannot have immediate diarrhea within 15 minutes or less and have it come from the food you just consumed... -
Hey...good luck and have a wonderful trip to the UK! London is such a fun city and this year is the 500th anniversary of the accession of King Henry the VIII to the throne. There are all kinds of displays and exhibitions going on around the city so it might be fun. Another suggestion for you, which I totally enjoyed, was doing some of the London Walks. They...

ARCHIVED Celiac Panel Reliability After Being Gluten Free For 2 Days?
Gemini replied to ConfusedNeuropathic's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A 2 day gluten-free diet will not affect testing so you should be OK. I had my blood work done 3 days after starting the diet simply because I could not leave the house until the diarrhea had stopped. No way was I going to venture out anywhere until that happened! I knew by then I was a Celiac because diarrhea like that will not stop on it's own, without... -
ARCHIVED Wine Barrels Sealed With Flour Paste
Gemini replied to monkeydragon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As many others have said, I drink red wine everyday and am a HIGHLY sensitive Celiac. If there is a trace amount of gluten in anything, and I eat it, I feel like crap and know I have ingested gluten. I have never, ever gotten sick from any kind of wine I have ingested. In fact, if there is no such thing as a gluten free wine, my blood work should be sky... -
This is all excellent information and correct but usually when the parathyroid goes and calcium levels get too high, it's because of a tumor which can easily be seen with a CAT scan. In that case, it will have to be removed or the condition will get worse. What's interesting, though, is that if there is no tumor seen and the problem cannot be traced to that...

ARCHIVED Trials For Celiac Vaccine Have Begun
Gemini replied to amber's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Geez, and I thought what I ate WAS a normal diet! -
I have the Le Creuset brand of cookware and, although they are cast iron, they are coated with a enamel finish. I refused to replace any of them except the very oldest ones whose finish may be compromised after 20 years use. They are expensive pots and pans so I wasn't about to replace the newer ones. Enamelware is basically fired on and I highly doubt they...

Nicole.....try Open Original Shared Link. Do a search for "49 Hans Place" in Knightsbridge and this should take you to the apartment we rented on our last trip. I do not know what your budget is but their current quoted on-line prices start at about 150 GBP per night, per flat. We rented a larger, deluxe studio in this building and it was lovely. However...

ARCHIVED Things A New Celiac Can Eat Right Away
Gemini replied to wendstress's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You always give such informative and straightforward advice, Peter! If it weren't for the liability problem, most information regarding gluten-free status would be easier for everyone. I also have used Chapstick without any problems so that is good enough for me. -
ARCHIVED Improving Every Month
Gemini replied to dogle's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Don't be upset if your frequency of going to the bathroom does not diminish. Unless you are going 20 times a day, it is NOT abnormal to have 4-5 BM's per day, as long as they are healthy BM's. I am a tiny person and always had many BM's per day before diagnosis and they were as you described yourself. Once I recovered, I still go the same amount only they... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination
Gemini replied to Nancy Kotlowski's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would advise your husband to read the book: Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic by Dr. Peter Green. It is extremely informative regarding the disease process and how you can or cannot be glutened. You are correct....there is a lot of misleading information out there and it's hard to tell fact from fiction sometimes. This book is excellent and I recommend...
